Long Family of Longs Mill near Liberty, Randolph County, NC

I am posting this here, in addition to the Randolph County page, as there may be those who would be interested. I have not researched this family in depth, and so I will not promise you that this information is complete or totally accurate. And I do need to make a trip to Randolph County to get some records on them. This Long family moved to NC as Quakers. They belonged for a while to the Cane Creek Meeting in SW Orange County, but they actually lived "over the line" in an area that became part of Guilford County in 1771 and then became part of Randolph County in 1785. The known family line starts with James Long of New York, and his son John Long, who married first Mary Clark and then Mary Wilson. John is buried at Cane Creek Meeting in what is now Chatham County, NC. His gravemarker is shown on their website.

A man that some call John Long, Jr., is actually Dr. John Wesley Long. He was born in 1785 in Loudoun County, Virginia, a son of John Long and his first wife Mary Clark. Dr. John Wesley Long married Sabra Shepherd "Sibby" Ramsey of Fayetteville, Cumberland County, NC.

JWL & SSR's first known son, Dr. Osmond Fitz Long (born 1808) married Frances Helen Webb (called Helen) of Hillsborough, Orange County, NC. They had three daughters: Margaret Taylor "Mag", Lily, and Annie. Helen Webb was a daughter of Dr. James Webb and Annie Alves Huske of Hillsborough.

The second son of JWL & SSR was William John Long (born 1815), who became an attorney. He married Mary Webb, a daughter of Dr. James Webb and Annie Alves Huske. They had 8 children: Sabra Ramsey, Annie Webb, Jane Taylor, Elizabeth Strudwick "Lizzie", John Webb, William Osmond, John Henry, and Mary Alves. Mary Alves wrote a book about her family and growing up during the post-Civil-War years called "High Time To Tell It," which can be found in the used-book dealer internet network sources.

The third son of JWL & SSR was James Allen Long (born 1817), who was also an attorney. He married Agnes C. Caldcleugh of Davidson County. They had 7 children. They both died young of tuberculosis in 1864. The older children, Lizzie, Eleanor, and Agnes, went to live with their grandmother Sibby. The younger children Edwin, Loraine, Alex, Mary Shepherd, and their maternal aunt Miss Lizzie Caldcleugh, went to live with their uncle William John Long.

The fourth son of JWL & SSR was Dr. John Wesley Long, Jr., born 1824. He married Nancy Margaret Troy of Randolph County. They had at least 3 children.

There was a fifth son, whose birthdate I do not know. His name was Edwin Long, and he married Phoebe Fitch. They had two sons and a daughter: John O., James "Jim Buffalo", and Helen Maria.

JWL#1 & SSR could have had more children who died young, but I don't know whether or not that is true. JWL#1 left the Quaker congregation when he married Sibby, because she wasn't Quaker, and he never looked back, although he stayed a close friend and associate of his Quaker kin and neighbors. He and his wife and most of his children are buried at what was Richland Lutheran Church near Liberty, Randolph County, NC. I've been to that cemetery and have photos of the graves. The church is now known as Richland Gospel Church.

Back to Dr. John Wesley Long, Jr....

JWL Jr. or JWL#2, and his wife Nancy Margaret Troy, daughter of John Balfour Troy and Nancy Lane, had at least a daughter Alice, and a son Thomas Preston Troy, who both died in infancy. Their son, Dr. John Wesley Long, III, was born in 1859. Whether there was another son named Osmond T. Long, born 1861, I don't know. It would take a check of Randolph County census and other records to ascertain that, and I've not gone up this particular family tree when I've dug in the census records for the area.

Dr. John Wesley Long, III, married Mary Elizabeth Woollen, and he became a prominent surgeon in Guilford County and was well known throughout the state. He died in 1926. He was my husband's great-grandfather. He and his wife had four children.

I would certainly be interested in finding out whether anyone belongs to this Long family group.
