Hi Larry,

There was a marriage registered for George Galloway and Isabella Allison in the registration district of Rutherglen (Lanark County) in 1876. You can access the registration online on the Scotland's People website. This is the official website for births, deaths and marriages in Scotland, as well as old parish registers for christenings/marriages and census records. It is a pay site, but the cost is very modest. You get 30 credits for 6GBP and (knowing the year and reg. district) it should only take 6 credits to view the marriage registration (1 to find the record in the index and 5 to bring up an image of the marr. reg.). It's a fantastic site for those of us researching from abroad. You can print the images and the SP site saves everything you have viewed, so that you can go back to it at a later date. The marriage reg. will list both George and Isabella's parents. (You could also order the film for the registration through an LDS Family History Center.)
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

The census records for the Galloway family were not consistent. George was shown as born in Ireland on the 1881 census in Scotland, but afterward in the U.S. his birthplace was listed as Scotland. I think I have found his family on census records in Scotland, however, even they are inconsistent and the name Galloway seems to have evolved over time.

George and Isabella named two of their daughters Jane Moncrieff (Montcrieff) - 2nd daughter, born in Rutherglen in 1880 (death for Jane Moncrieff Galloway, age 3, was registered 1883 in Rutherglen) and another daughter born in Kingston, Ontario in 1889. Although you will have to obtain proof, through George and Isabella's marriage registration, I think George's parents were James Galloway (previously Gauley, Ganley) and Jane Moncrieff. This family seems to have moved from Ireland to Rutherglen, Scotland between 1848 and 1850. They appear on every census in Scotland from 1851 onward, but the birthplace for their son George (b.c. 1854/55) was shown as Ireland in 1861 and Rutherglen in 1871. I checked the LDS website and found several children born to this couple after 1855 (in statutory births) and the LDS British Isles Vital Records Index had a christening record for one of their sons (pre1855) - nothing for the other three children. Since the LDS website carries all birth records in Scotland between 1855 and 1874, George was either born before 1855 (likely 1854) in Rutherglen or the family returned to Ireland for a short period about the time of George's birth.

Some information for Isabella's family is at the end of the message.

Regards,
Charlene

From LDS British Isles Vital Records Index CDs - information extracted from civil registrations for marriages:

James GANLEY
Wife: Jane MONCRIEFFE
Marriage Date: 14 Jan 1847
Recorded in: Miscellaneous, Ireland
Collection: Civil Registration for Marriages
Husband's Father:       Isaick GANLEY
Wife's Father: John MONCRIEFFE

Unfortunately, the Irish marriage registrations at that time didn't show the county or parish in which the marriage took place. I checked to see if there were any other entries for anything resembling Gauley/Ganley/Galloway where the father's name was Isaiah or Isaac, but nothing came up. There were three Moncrieff marriages in Aughnamullen, County Monaghan around the same time, father's name John, however, difficult to say if they are related.

MONCRIEFF, Margaret..........1855

MONCRIEFF, Elizabeth..........1861

I'm not sure if the spelling of James' name is accurate or if it was actually Gauley and perhaps difficult for the transcriber to read. You can get a film for the above marriage registration through an LDS Family History Center. The LDS website has a list of the locations for their FHCs. You can also submit a request to the General Register Office in Dublin for a copy of the entry from the register.

Not positive, but the following 1901 census entry may be for George's father. There was only one James Galloway (or variations of Galloway) on both the 1891 and 1901 census, born in Ireland between 1815 & 1835 - 1891 shown above. If this was George's father, it means that if he died in the hospital, it is unlikely his death registration will list his parents' names, unless one of his children came forward at the time of death. Normally, when someone died while in an institution, the facility completed the registration, so little information is shown.

1901:
Name: James Galloway
Age: 83
Estimated birth year: abt 1818

(couldn't find Jane Galloway on this census - she had likely died beforehand)
