Looking for the English family from Counties Cork, Tipperary, and Limerick, in Ireland

We will be taking a trip to Ireland next month. We would really like to visit the places where my husband’s ancestors lived. What would really be awesome would be to meet other descendants of those ancestors. Places identified so far are: Parish of Kilbehenny and Anglesboro, County Tipperary, in the Diocese of Cashel and Emly, and Mitchilstown, on the boundary of the counties of Cork and Limerick. Other places could be Glenacurrane, Kilglass, and the Barony of Cashlea.

Surnames mentioned in the English family baptismal and marriage records found in the Parish of Kilbehenny are: Hanrahan, Dunne, Noonan, O’Brien, Smith, O’Sullivan, Lonergan, O’Neile, and Murphy. These people were probably family members or at least neighbors. We would be grateful for any information that would supplement the information below.

Edmund ENGLISH was born about 1817 in County Cork, Ireland according to his death certificate. On Tuesday, 7 March 1848, Edmund ENGLISH, son of Edward and Mary ENGLISH, married Mary HANRAHAN (age 19) in the Parish of Kilbehenny and Anglesboro, County Tipperary, Ireland. Mary HANRAHAN of Glencurrane, daughter of Timothy HANRAHAN (a farmer) and Catherine NOONAN, had been baptized on 5 Jul 1828, in the Parish of Kilbehenny and Anglesboro, County Tipperary, Ireland, and listed as sponsors were Elizabeth NOONAN and James DUNNE. Edmund (a.k.a. Edward) and Mary ENGLISH immigrated to the United States between 1874 and 1884. Mary HANRAHAN died on 27 May 1884 in 1291 Palimar St., Ward 18, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, at age 55 years, 10 months and 22 days. She was buried on 1 June 1884 in Section T, Range 5, Lot 27, in the New Cathedral Cemetery, 2nd and Butler, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Edmund ENGLISH died at age 75 years on Friday, 26 August 1892 in 1330 Broad St., Ward 18, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. He was buried on 30 August 1892 in Section T, Range 5, Lot 27, in the New Cathedral Cemetery, 2nd and Butler, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Mary HANRAHAN and Edmund ENGLISH had ten children listed below:

Catherine J. ENGLISH was baptized on 28 Jul 1850 in the Parish of Kilbehenny and Anglesboro, County Tipperary, Ireland, and listed as sponsors were Michael ENGLISH and Margaret ENGLISH. She immigrated about 1873 to the United States. On Monday, 24 April 1876, at age 25, Catherine J. ENGLISH married Bernard CONWAY in Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Front and Allen, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Witnesses were Ellen HARDING and Cornelio CONWAY. Catherine J. ENGLISH died in March 1917 at age 66 years. She was buried on 21 March 1917 in Section N, Range 3, Lot 36, in the New Cathedral Cemetery, 2nd and Butler, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Maurice ENGLISH was baptized on 10 August 1852 in the Parish of Kilbehenny and Anglesboro, County Tipperary, Ireland, and listed as sponsors were Maurice ENGLISH and Catherine HANRAHAN. Maurice ENGLISH died on 23 June 1929 in Episcopal Hospital, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, at age 76 years, 10 months and 13 days. On his death certificate his father's name was listed as Edmund and his mother's name as Ellen. He was buried on Wednesday, 26 June 1929 in Section T, Range 5, Lot 27 in the New Cathedral Cemetery, 2nd and Butler, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Ellen ENGLISH may have been born about 1855 in County Cork in Ireland. Probably before 24 April 1876, Ellen ENGLISH married Michael HARDING. This is a supposition based on the premise that she was probably the Ellen HARDING that witnessed her sister, Catherine's, marriage in 1876. Her husband, Michael HARDING, was born about 1849 in Ireland and died in the United States in October 1883 at age 34 years. He was buried on 11 October 1883 in Section T, Range 5, Lot 27, in the New Cathedral Cemetery, 2nd and Butler, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

John ENGLISH was baptized on 29 November 1855 in the Parish of Kilbehenny and Anglesboro, County Tipperary, Ireland, and listed as sponsors were Andrew O’BRIEN and Margaret SMITH. He immigrated in 1880 to the United States. On Wednesday, 14 September 1904, at age 48, John ENGLISH married a 36 year old lady named Catherine in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. She may have been a widow named Catherine BAGNER, whose first husband had died about 1895. John ENGLISH was widowed before 16 April 1910. He died on 14 April 1928 in 613 W. Clearfield St., Ward 43, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, at age 72 years, 4 months and 16 days. He was buried on 17 April 1928 in Section E, Range 7, Grave 43, in the New Cathedral Cemetery, 2nd and Butler, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

An unnamed baby of Edmund and Mary ENGLISH was baptized on 24 December 1857 in the Parish of Kilbehenny and Anglesboro, County Tipperary, Ireland and listed as sponsors were Benjamin MARTIN and Catherine HANRAHAN. This could be an eleventh child. But, since the birth dates listed in records available in the United States have been quite unreliable, this child could be either Ellen or Michael for whom no records in Ireland have been found.

Margaret ENGLISH was baptized on 3 December 1859 in the Parish of Kilbehenny and Anglesboro, County Tipperary, Ireland, and listed as sponsors were Thomas HANRAHAN and Catherine O’BRIEN. She appeared on the census of 10 June 1880 in 712 Richmond St., Ward 18, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, as a servant in the household of Michael and Ellen HARDING (her brother-in-law and sister) who appear to be running a boarding house. Margaret ENGLISH may have married a Mr. BAGNER.

Edward Michael ENGLISH was baptized as Edmund ENGLISH on 3 March 1862 in the Parish of Kilbehenny and Anglesboro, County Tipperary, Ireland, and listed as sponsors were Maurice ENGLISH and Ally HANRAHAN. He immigrated between 1878 and 1880 to the United States. On Thursday, 2 June 1892, at age 30, Edward Michael ENGLISH married Catharine RODGERS (age 25), daughter of Frank and Catherine RODGERS, in Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Front and Allen, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, Edward died at age 80 years, 7 months and 10 days on Monday, 12 October 1942 in 613 W. Clearfield St., Ward 43, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania,. He was buried on 16 October 1942 in Section E, Range 9, Lot 43, in the New Cathedral Cemetery, 2nd and Butler, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Edward ENGLISH’s wife, Catharine RODGERS was born between 1861 and 1871 possibly in County Tyrone, Ireland. She immigrated between 1880 and 1888 to the United States. Catherine died on 6 November 1924 in 613 W. Clearfield St., Ward 43, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, at age 57 years, 10 months and 27 days. She was buried on 10 November 1924 in Section E, Range 9, Lot 43, in the New Cathedral Cemetery, 2nd and Butler, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.,

Michael ENGLISH was born on Thursday, 10 December 1863 County Cork, in Ireland, according to his marriage license. No baptismal certificate has been found for him. He immigrated between 1880 and 1892 to the United States. On Wednesday, 25 May 1898, at age 34, Michael ENGLISH married Catherine GLEASON (age 28), daughter of Martin GLEASON and Joanna SHEEHAN, in Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Front and Allen, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Witnesses were his brother, John ENGLISH, and her sister, Elizabeth GLEASON. Michael ENGLISH died on 19 December 1932 in 425 Salmon St., Ward 18, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, at age 69 years and 9 days. He was buried on 23 December 1932 in Section O, Range 6, Lot 28, in the New Cathedral Cemetery, 2nd and Butler, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.,

Michael ENGLISH’s wife, Catherine GLEASON, was born between 1869and 1874 in Ireland. Her death certificate lists her date of birth as 1 December 1874. She immigrated in 1890 to the United States. Catherine GLEASON died on 23 November 1939 in 425 Salmon St., Ward 18, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, at age 69 years. She was buried on 27 November 1939 in Section T, Range 5, Lot 27, in the New Cathedral Cemetery, 2nd and Butler, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Mary ENGLISH was born on Monday, 1 August 1864 in Kilglass, Kilbehenny. Mary ENGLISH was baptized on 2 August 1864 in the Parish of Kilbehenny and Anglesboro, County Tipperary, Ireland, and listed as sponsors were Maurice O’SULLIVAN and Hanora LONERGAN. She immigrated in 1880 to the United States. She appeared on the United States Federal Census of 9 Jun 1880 at 1933 Tulip St., Ward 31, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, in the household of her brother-in-law, Bernard CONWAY, and sister, Catherine J. CONWAY. Mary ENGLISH married Albert FRANTZ Sr. about 1895.

Alice ENGLISH was baptized on 22 September 1867 in the Parish of Kilbehenny and Anglesboro, County Tipperary, Ireland, and listed as sponsors were Michael O’NEILE and Catherine MURPHY. But, her civil birth certificate reports her birth on 24 September 1867 in Kilglass, Kilbehenny, Ireland. Her unrealistic birth and baptism dates are according to official documents. She immigrated in 1880 to the United States. On Tuesday, 8 September 1885, at age 17, Alice ENGLISH married Michael RAFFERTY in Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Front and Allen, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Witnesses were Patrick McBRIDE and her sister, Catherine J. CONWAY. Michael RAFFERTY died on 22 January 1894 in 900 Shackamaxon St., Ward 16, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, at age 37 years On Wednesday, 8 April 1896, at age 28, Alice ENGLISH RAFFERTY married John GLEASON (age 27), son of Martin GLEASON and Joanna SHEEHAN, in Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Front and Allen, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Witnesses were Mary ENGLISH and Michael GLEASON. Alice ENGLISH died in February 1911 at age 43 years. She was buried on 17 Feb 1911 in Section H, Range 12, Lot 17, in the New Cathedral Cemetery, 2nd and Butler, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Alice ENGLISH’s second husband, John GLEASON, was born on Monday, 21 December 1868 in the Irish Free State, Ireland. He immigrated in 1890 to the United States and was naturalized in 1897. John GLEASON died in September 1942 at age 73 years. He was buried on 12 September 1942 in Section H, Range 12, Lot 17, in the New Cathedral Cemetery, 2nd and Butler, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
