Hello Calvin,

It never seems like a load to me to dig into genealogy, and there are so many other wonderful people on this forum helping and I thoroughly enjoy it - just wish I had more time for it.

Your people have been a challenge! I have gone through every reference that I own and found only one entry:

Grimshaw, female child, age 2, died 1881 at Churubusco

There was not a full date, no parents, nor witnesses. So it then became a challenge to me!

My next step was to check the Ancestry.com census index and I found these in Clinton County by doing a Soundex search for Grimshaw:

1. Zephanah GriMshaw - 1820 - Mooers - p421
2. John GriMshaw - 1850 - Clinton - p090
3. Nelson GriMshaw - 1850 - Clinton - p090
4. Welson GriNshaw - 1860 - Clinton - p477
5. Barzilla GriNshaw - 1860 - Clinton - p492

I believe #4 should have been Nelson, but the transcriber read it wrong. The only way to be sure is to view the actual census.

I then did page searches to see who else lived in the same vicinity. It doesn't work with the 1820 census because that is simply an alphabetical list for the county. You could view that census and at least get some basics on the numbers of people and age ranges in his household.

For the 1850 where John & Nelson are on the same page, the other surnames are: Ablison, Anderson, Bingham, Calkins, Curry, Gagnon, Hogle, Levay, Levellotte, Martin, Marshall, McCoy, Oliver, Patterson, Smith, and Sweet.

For the 1860 page with Welson - Elliott, Farmare, Mitchel, Ring, and Walbridge.

For the 1860 page with Barzillai - Bettle, Dodro, Mew, Ring, and Sunderland.

If you can look at any of those - especially the 1850, you might glean alot - possibly/probably they are sons of Zephanah and he might show up residing with one of them.

I next went to the IGI and had a little success. This may be stuff you already have, so excuse the duplication if it is..ok?

There is an entry for Zephaniah - born @1791, of Clinton, Oneida County, NY - no parents listed.

Then there are a whole lot of entries that are of interest and I think the IGI is wrong. It shows people that I believe are the same ones who were in Clinton County. What the IGI shows is all the events occurring/recorded at Clinton, Oneida County, NY. There is a Clinton in Oneida. The only way to know for sure if the IGI is wrong (other than searching in Oneida County's records) is to look at the censuses and see if the wife and children match up.

There was an entry for Barzilia Grimshaw born @1830, of Quebec - no further info. That is probably one of the stock entries that is always put into the IGI. They have a marriage record and they figure the person married at @21 years of age, so they put in a birth entry for the person.

Then there was Barzilia marrying in Russeltown, Beauharnois on 13 Oct 1851 to Louisa Nokes.

My next find was John Nelson Grimshaw born 1817, Clinton, Oneida, NY to Zephaniah Grimshaw & Roxie ..... As well as being on the IGI, it was also in an Ancestral File submission. When church members submit their info - if they provide documentation of some sort, it can also be put into the IGI. I expect the submitter had the wrong county and it went all through the system that way.

John Nelson Grimshaw & Emeline Wilson married 26 Mar 1839 at Montreal. These are the children shown for them - unless otherwise noted, the entries all shown Clinton, Oneida County:
1. Mary Ann, 1841, Montreal
2. Adaline, 1844, Quebec
3. John Nelson, 1846, Montreal
4. Lucy Roxy, 1848
5. George Lucien, 1850
6. Stephen Judson, 1852
7. Henry Scott, 1854
8. Harve Wilson, 1856
9. James Alfred, 1858
10. Sarah Jane, 1859
11. Edith May/Mary, 1861/1862
12. McDonald, 1863

Following those people further along - some go to Kansas.

I don't know that any of Clinton's records are published, nor how difficult it would be to get anything from the town or county clerks. I think your best bet would be the census to see what else you might be able to come up with.

It appears that the family were not Catholic, so how one or more of the family ended up buried there is a good question. Maybe Adaline Covey was the French Catholic - as Grimshaw appears to be Anglo. If Adaline was FC - the Covey name has been Anglicized from Couvriere and several similar ones. I found nothing that appeared of any help in the few Covey entries I found.

Other than load you down with tons of info - I really haven't been able to help. I even went through the death/burial entries and checked all the 1872s and still didn't find any that could have been Zeph.

If you can think of something else for me to look at, let me know.

Bev
