Names Indexed: MCDONALD, CHARLES / MCDONALD, JOHN / MCMILLAN, DUNCAN / SKIPPER, SAMUEL / CAMPBELL, DONALD / Locations: BLACK CREEK / CHESTERFIELD DISTRICT Type: PLAT/
NOTE: Bishop Gregg's HISTORY OF THE OLD CHERAWS reveals an unexpected fact concerning the Skippers. Describing the Revolutionary conflict between Tories and Patriots--the desperate and bloody partisan warfare which gripped the Carolina backcountry-- he says: "On the eastern side of the river (the Pee Dee,) near the dividing line between Richmond County, and what is now Marlborough District, lived two young men, named Skipper, of mixed blood, but peaceable and inoffensive. They had taken parole, however, and for no other offence, were seized by the Whigs on both sides of the line and hung. Such a course was well calculated to excite a feeling of bloody retaliation and thus the murderous conflict continued."
NOTE: About what year was this???? What was the names of these 2 Skipper men? Were these Skipper men married? what were the wives names? Did they have children? Who were their neighbors? - Ann, Saw your post on genealogy.com about the Skipper brothers who were hung. Larry Cates wrote about that somewhere on the web. This was just after the Revolutionary War. It said they had just taken "parole" not "patrol". In other words they had been tories, or had sided with the British, and had taken parole saying they would support the newly formed U.S. nation. Apparently that was not good enough for some folks. Larry seems to indicate that they were killed partly because they were indians. Andrew

Ms., Alabama., and Ga. - Jesse SKIPPER married Sarah "Sallie" (GRAVES) 4 January 1852 in Yalabusha Co., MS. She was shown as the daughter of Sarah GRAVES b. 1807 NC in the 1850 Yalabusha Co. census. Other children listed with Sarah were:

SC 1810 - Hugh Skipper and Mary (Norwood) Skipper I have the same dates as you, based on the 1830 and 1840 census records. If these records are to be believed, Hugh was born in 1810 and Mary Norwood between 1810 and 1820. The slim supply of any other records for Skippers in the area is frustrating.

Ga, and AR. - I am trying to find the parents of Charity Skipper born about 1810. According to the 1860 Census record she was born in GA. She married George Washington Brinsfield on 11/3/1836 in Coweta County, GA. They divorced around 1848 - 1852. She died in Izard County, AR after 1860. I have a picture of her, George and Charity's mother and she and her mother are obviously of Indian decent. I would appreciate any help on finding Charity's parents. Thanks, Marshia (Pitts) Vance

1815 Cheraws and Darlington, SC - In the book of research on THE SOUTH CAROLINE NORWOOD TRADITION by Mr. Bauer this information is given on Thomas:
"Thomas Norwood: During the 50 year period ending with the 1810 Census of Darlington County,
there were two Thomas Norwoods of record in Darlington;
One of these was a son of Theophilus 2. ( or Jr. I believe there are 13 on record)
This is proved by good circumstantial evidence in the form of the 1790 and 1800 census and land records in SC State Plat Book 8:109 #2 for 200 acres in Cheraws District on the south west side of Black Creek near Swift Creek; surveyed 22 Sept 1784 by William Powe, D. S.
Census records show that Thomas Norwood was born before 1755.
He may have been the oldest son of Theophilus 2 Norwood, since (in 1784) Thomas was first son to buy land in the Swift Creek area near the land which Theophilus 2 Norwood purchased in 1760.
I will not burden this thesis with a detailed rationale of the census records. That is covered in another document. Suffice it to say that a rigorous examination of the census records showed that
(1) the Thomas Norwood, with a wife and 9 children in the 1800 census was one generation later than Theophilus 2 Norwood and could only have been a son of Theophilus 2 Norwood;
(2) records rule out that he could have been a son of Theophilus's brother, Samuel;
(3) records rule out that he could have been any other nephew of Theophilus 2;
(3) records rule out that he could have been a cousin or grandson of Theophilus 2;
(4) it would be incredible to believe that he could be unrelated in any way to Theophilus 2 Norwood since he was in the Norwood nest on Swift Creek. (Mr. B. had 2 #3's in that paragraph) This was the Thomas who went to Georgia between 1801 and 1809; and whose son, Britton Norwood, acted as his agent in a land transaction in Darlington in 1815.
It is significant that Thomas Norwood did not join the "heirs" of Theophilus 2 Norwood when they were selling this land on Swift Creek in 1792. Thomas appears to have been living in Darlington at that time, and no record explains why he didn't participate in that transaction. However, that fact, alone doesn't preclude Thomas being a son of Theophilus 2 Norwood.
There may have been records which would explain it and thewy were burned in the Darlington Court House fire. Remember, the 1792 Indenture was in private possession and didn't burn."
That is the end of his information on Thomas.
Do you know the history before Theophilus I, the Tory who was murdered. He was born around 1700 Theophilus 2 was born around 1725 if my memory is correct.
According to this work Thomas would have been the son of Theophilus 2 and Margaret (Dawson).
My Zachariah was the son of Theophilus 2 and Eliza (St. George) .
Also this Theophilus was in the Revolution on the colony side!
Hope this will help. Lucy

1836 Catawba Indian Tribe History - Catawba (probably from Choctaw katápe, `divided,' `separated,' `a division.'-Gatschet). The most important of the eastern Siouan tribes. It is said that Lynche creek, South Carolina east of the Catawba territory, was anciently known as Kadapau; and from the fact that Lawson applies this name to a small band met by him southeast of the main body, which he calls Esaw, it is possible that it was originally given to this people by some tribe living in eastern South Carolina, from whom the first colonists obtained it. The Cherokee, having no b in their language, changed the name to Atakwa, .plural Anitakwa. The Shawnee and other tribes of the Ohio valley made the word Cuttawa. From the earliest period the Catawba have also been known as Esaw, or Issa (Catawba iswä', `river'), from their residence on the principal stream of the region, Iswa being their only name for the Catawba and Wateree rivers. They were frequently included by the Iroquois under the general term Totiri, or Toderichroone, another form of which is Tutelo, applied to all the southern Siouan tribes collectively. They were classed by Gallatin (1836) as a distinct stock, and were so regarded until Gatschet visited them in 1881 and obtained a large vocabulary showing numerous Siouan correspondences. Further investigations by Hale, Gatschet, Mooney, and Dorsey proved that several other tribes of the same region were also of Siouan stock, while the linguistic forms and traditional evidence all point to this eastern region as the original home of the Siouan tribes. The alleged tradition which brings the Catawba from the north, as refugees from the French and their Indian allies about the year 1660, does not agree in any of its main points with the known facts of history, and, if genuine at all, refers rather to some local incident than to a tribal movement. It is well known that the Catawba were in a chronic state of warfare with the northern tribes, whose raiding parties they sometimes followed, even across the Ohio.

Hugh Skipper and his wife Mary (Norwood) .... Elizabeth Kirk Skipper, was born in 1840 in McClellanville, Charleston District. The family story is that she was Catawba Indian.

1841 Catawba Indians - 1841 they sold to the state all but a single square mile, on which they now reside. About the same time a number of the Catawba, dissatisfied with their condition among the whites, removed to the eastern Cherokee in western North Carolina, but finding their position among their old enemies equally unpleasant, all but one or two soon went back again. An old woman, the last survivor of this emigration, died among the Cherokee in 1889

SC - Ann, I do have another Skipper connection. It is through Evander McCall Skipper 1846 -1933, he married Catherine (Godbold) 1846-1880. My Grandmother was a Godbold from Marion County, SC. She married Jesse S. Hawkins........my Grandfather from Darlington County. I don't know if you are related to those Skipper's, I believe that Evander Skipper can be traced back to Abraham Skipper from Brunswick County, NC. Jeff Hawkins sent Feb 16, 2008

Alabama , Ga, - Isaac B. Skipper is an enigma. I have his marriage to Mary Elizabeth (Vickery) in Lowndes Co., AL. in 1847 and I know his son William M. Skipper was born in 1853 and his son Isaac Birdsong Skipper was born in 1854. That is all I know about him. I have never found him in a census and lose track of the entire family until 1873 when the 2 sons are in the city Directory of Columbus, Ga. and Isaac Birdsong Skipper marries in 1873 in Lee Co. AL. His mother has to give him written permission to marry and her name is signed as Mary E. Sigler or Siglar. I can not find the mother, Mary Elizabeth Vickery Skipper Siglar until the 1900 census and then she is listed as Mary Skipper. You would think I would find the couple in the 1850 census but I have had no luck. It's reasonable to think that there were older children born to them between 1847 and 1853 but if so, they did not survive or lived in a totally different area and I am just not aware of the connection. Isaac Birdsong Skipper names his first (and only) son, James R(elius?)Skipper. William M. Skipper names his first-born child, a daughter, Warnie(!) Lee Skipper, and his son, William Isaac Robert Homer Skipper( I think I got those in the correct order). So those are the name clues I have. The Birdsong middle name is a mystery. I have made no connection to a Birdsong family. I am kind of running on here but my dead-ends are numerous! I have speculated that Isaac B. Skipper might be related to the Barnabas and Temperance Skipper that lived in Butler Co, Al. but only due to the time frame, location, and the name Isaac appearing in that line. Also, I thought the name Warnie might be an attempt by William M. to use the family name of Barney/Barna if dear old dad wasn't around to set him straight on the correct name. I would be deeply grateful to anyone who can ever give me an Isaac clue. I will be looking through my old research for a J.W. Skipper/Scipper. Maybe I will run across something that will assist you.

Ann, Saw your post on genealogy.com about the Skipper brothers who were hung. Andrew

1790 - 1860 - Enumerators listed Native Americans who did not live on reservations and were taxed, but seldom identified them as Native Americans. They were usually identified as white if they were living with white people, or black if they were living with black people. Native Americans living on reservations or as nomads were not counted.

1860 Catawba Indians - 1881 Gatschet found 85 on the reservation, which, including 35 employed on neighboring farms, made a total of 120. The present number is given as 60, but as this apparently refers only to those attached to the reservation, the total may be about 100. See Lawson, History of Carolina, 1714 and 1860; Gatschet, Creek Migration Legend, 1-11,

Sc 1860 - The Catawba were confined to a small reservation in South Carolina.

Photo - THE home of Abijah Hollingsworth Skipper and his wife Sarah C. (Smith) Skipper. It stood on the southeast corner of the intersection of Laurel Street and Sixth Avenue in Conway, South Carolina. A.H. Skipper was the sheriff of Horry County in the late 1860s and in the 1870s. His father was Joel B. Skipper, who served as state senator from Horry. Abijah Skipper was born near the Little Pee Dee River just downriver from Gallivant's Ferry in Horry District, SC. Sarah was from the Little River, SC area. Both are buried in the Conway First United Methodist Churchyard. Abijah Skipper and Sarah are sitting in front of the steps. I believe that pictured standing to the left of the steps is Henry Homer Burroughs, beside him standing on the porch is his wife, Isadora C. (Skipper) Burroughs, sitting in a chair on the porch is an unidentified man, standing on the porch to the right is Julia (Skipper) Causey and standing to the right of the steps and behind Sarah is Capt. Coleman S. Causey. An unidentified boy is standing in the yard to the right. Notice the "joggling board" on the front porch. The house was purchased by Dr. Henry L. Scarborough and around 1918 it was demolished to make way for the house that is currently (2006) located on the lot. Source: http://www.hchsonline.org/places/AHSkipperHouse

MORE: - Ann, Saw your post on genealogy.com about the Skipper brothers who were hung. Andrew

Cheraw Indians Connection in which they have become noted. The Cheraw are famous as one of the few tribes in the Carolinas mentioned by De Soto's chroniclers which can be identified and located with fair precision. They were noted later for their persistent hostility to the English and have left their name in Suwali Gap in the Blue Ridge Mountains, N. C.; in Saura Town Mountains, Stokes County, N. C.; in the town of Cheraw, Chesterfield County, S. C.; and possibly in the Uwaharrie River and Uwabarrie Mountains of North Carolina. There is a locality named Cheraw in Otero County, Colo.

1865 SC - William Henry Suder wrote a letter to his sons, telling them why Elizabeth Skipper's - sister Caroline Ann (Skipper) Meyers would raise them until he returned home, but the letter was lost long ago. William Henry probably never saw his sons again. All that is known is that sometime between February and May of 1865 (just weeks after Elizabeth died in Charleston) while transporting a regiment of the Southern army to safety, the boiler of William’s engine exploded and took his life. In 1870, five years after the war ended, William Henry’s brother, Archibald Whitney Suder, was living in Sumter with his family. And sister Alice Suder, 23, was living in Charleston’s Ward 4 with the family of Real Estate Broker Thad A. Whitney. Elvira died in 1892 at the age of 80, and was buried with her husband. It is not known if the sons of William and Elizabeth (Skipper) Suder ever knew their grandmother. William Hugh never wrote about her. Elvira and Peter J. Suder were both buried in the cemetery of Charleston’s Second Presbyterian Church, which Peter joined in January 1830 and where he married Elvira in 1832. The Whitney family plot is located in the cemetery of the Circular Congregational Church on Meeting Street. Archibald and Mary Drennes Whitney, Elvira’s parents had a large family, and many are buried in this plot. There was one Suder buried there. She died at eight years of age in 1858, and was listed as a child of EM and PJ Suder. She had to have been their youngest daughter, Eliza - William Henry’s sister. Sons of Elizabeth (Skipper) and William Suder are ?

Hi Ann,
I did the lookup on Elizabeth F. (WILSON) Skipper's death certificate for Allen Hunt. I added the info from James W. Dixon's death certificate which I had in my file. I was looking for a James Dixon b. abt. 1855 listed on the 1870 Darlington census. Still don't know if this is the same one and which John Dixon may have been his father. I have James W. Dixon & wife Sarah/Sallie on the 1880 Kershaw Co.(Buffalo), 1900 Marboro Co.(Red Hill) and 1910 Lee Co.(Turkey Creek) census. Contact me if you need the info. I am researching Dixons in Marlboro, Chesterfield & Darlington counties. Donna
ddw1025@aol.com

I'm not sure about your John Dixon, but here's a little info you may find helpful....
Lee County, SC did not exist until about 1902. It was created by combining portions of Sumter County, Kershaw County, and Darlington County. So the info you are looking for may not be available in Lee County, but in one of the other counties instead.
I don't know much about the Dixon line, but I'm told that my ancestors were in the "Lee" county area. I'll check with my Mom; she has a little info on the Dixon line in her materials. If she has anything on the one you are looking for, I'll post it here.

Darlington SC Skipper and (Hawkins) - Posted by: Jeffrey Hawkins (ID *****2342) Date: February 13, 2008 Ann, My Hawkins family is from Darlington County, SC. Victoria (Hawkins) was actually Naomi Victoria (Hawkins) born abt. 1872. She was a daughter of Thomas W. Hawkins & Hannah (Lloyd). Thomas W. Hawkins was a younger brother of my G-G Grandfather Daniel Hawkins.
William Gilbert Skipper & Naomi Victoria (Hawkins) children were:
1. Lizzie Skipper 10/22/1889-12/18/1889
2. Mary Skipper 1892-????
3. Thomas Skipper 6/1/1893-2/12/1895
4. Fanny Skipper 1896-aft. 1910
5. Henry Skipper 1898-aft.1910
6. Rachel Skipper 9/11/1902-6/9/1905
7. Jeremy Skipper 1908-????
8. Newton Elbert Skipper 12/30/1911-7/18/1982 married Louvinia (Huntley)
As you can seen most of the children died young except for Newton Elbert Skipper.
Most of the children are buried at the First Baptist Church in Hartsville, Darlington County, SC.
I seem to lose them after the 1910 Darlington County Census.
Naomi Hawkins had a brother named Newton Hawkins, this could be why they named a child Newton Elbert Skipper?
Newton Elbert Skipper & wife Louvinia Huntley are buried at the Gum Branch Baptist Church Cemetery in Darlington County.
William Gilbert Skipper & Naomi Victoria (Hawkins) are also buried at the Gum Branch Baptist Church. The headstone says "William & Victoria Skipper" no dates or anything else on it.
My Hawkins family has been in the Darlington area since the mid 1700's, before that they were in North Carolina & Virginia.
Here is Naomi's basic lineage:
1. John Hawkins b. abt. 1725 in Virginia m. Unknown.
2. John Hawkins b. abt. 1765-d.aft. 1820 m. Constance (?) .
3. John Hawkins b. bet. 1780-1790-d.1848 m. Lydia (Sellers), daughter of William Sellers & Betsy (Prestwood).
4. Thomas W. Hawkins b. 1834 d.bet. 1900-1910. m. Hannah (Lloyd), daughter of Levi Lloyd & Margaret (Walton). As I said before my line is Daniel Hawkins 1825-1892 who married Martha (Byrd), Daniel was an older brother of Thomas W. Hawkins who was the Father of Naomi Victoria Hawkins who married W.G. Skipper.
Naomi's siblings were:
1. James Leonard Hawkins 1859-1934
2. Newton "Newt" Hawkins 1865-bef. 1910
3. John Henry Hawkins 1866-1935
4. Lucious Hawkins 1874- aft.1920
5. Luther Hawkins 1875-????
6. Levi Rufus Hawkins 1878-1931
W.G. Skipper's parents are buried at the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Darlington County.
So it looks like you and I are related! Have more information if you need it?
Your cousin, Jeff Hawkins
NOTE: William Gilbert Skipper is my Great Granduncle All of his children are my 1st cousins twice removed.
More Hello Hankins people!
I was wondering if any of you all have come across the cross-spelling of this surname? My last name is Hawkins, I noticed in the 1870 census in South Carolina.........my Hawkins line is spelled HANKINS, all other census's show HAWKINS. Is Hankins an off-shoot of Hawkins or vice-versa. I see so many names and migration patterns that are just like my Hawkins line. One in particular is a Daniel Hankins, I have a Daniel Hawkins, same time period, same area, etc!!
Thank you, Jeff Hawkins

1880 SPECIAL CENSUS In 1880, the federal government took a Special Census of Indians, which counted a select group of Native Americans living on reservations in the Washington and Dakota territories, and in California. These records are available as microfilm publication number M1791. This publication is available in many of our regional archives. Viewing locations and a descriptive pamphlet and roll list can be found in the microfilm locator. Microfilm Locator (in Order Online) http://www.archives.gov/research/order/orderonline

1870 - 1880 Native Americans living on reservations were listed under the states and counties where the reservations were located. Usually the enumeration of the entire reservation was placed at the end of the listing for all others in the county. Native Americans living in the general population were identified as Indian.

1881 Catawba Indian Tribe History - Lynche creek, South Carolina - Catawba (probably from Choctaw katápe, `divided,' `separated,' `a division.'-Gatschet). 1881 Gatschet found 85 on the reservation, which, including 35 employed on neighboring farms, made a total of 120. The present number is given as 60, but as this apparently refers only to those attached to the reservation, the total may be about 100. See Lawson, History of Carolina, 1714 and 1860; Gatschet, Creek Migration Legend, 1-11,

1884 Catawba Indians A few other Cherokee are now intermarried with that tribe. At a later period some Catawba removed to the Choctaw Nation in Indian Territory and settled near Scullyville, but are said to be now extinct. About 1884 several became converts of Mormon missionaries in South Carolina and went with them to Salt Lake City, Utah. The Catawba were sedentary agriculturists, and seem to have differed but little in general customs from their neighbors. Their men were respected, brave, and honest, but lacking in energy. They were good hunters, while their women were noted makers of pottery and baskets, arts which they still preserve. They seem to have practiced the custom of head-flattening to a limited extent, as did several of the neighboring tribes. By reason of their dominant position they gradually absorbed the broken tribes of South Carolina, to the number, according to Adair, of perhaps 20. 1884-88; Mooney (1) Siouan Tribes of the East, Bull. 22, B. A. E.,

1889 Catawba Indians - 1841 they sold to the state all but a single square mile, on which they now reside.

Donna

Tue, 07 Aug 2007 15:54:14 -0400 From: "Inquire Public Reference Staff" <Inquire@nara.gov> To: "Ann G. <levitaann@yahoo.com> Subject: Re: Genealogy Dear Ms. Gallagher, I am also including information about Native American genealogical research below. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us. This e-mail address does not accept direct requests. Please send your request through the Contact NARA link on our website or using: http://www.archives.gov/contact/ - Sincerely, REBECCA SHARP Archives Specialist Archives I Research Support Branch
To find genealogical information for an individual in records about Native Americans, that person must have retained his or her tribal affiliation. Persons who left the tribe should be researched in the same manner as non-Native Americans. There are few records of the eastern tribes, many of which were nearly extinct by the time the federal government was established. There may be some state records relating to eastern tribes. For these records, you must contact the appropriate state agency. List of State Archives http://www.archives.gov/research/alic/reference/state-archives
NATIVE AMERICAN RECORDS IN THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES In general, the National Archives has three kinds of records for Native American genealogy: 1. Military 2. Federal census 3. Indian census or enrollment records.
MILITARY RECORDS:
Military service records, pension applications, and bounty land warrant applications for Native Americans are researched exactly like the military records for all other servicemen. Service and pension records before World War One (before around 1917) can be ordered online. Order Online http://www.archives.gov/research/order/orderonline
For World War One and later, veterans and next of kin should use eVetRecs. Everyone else should use the Standard Form 180 Veterans and their Families Portal http://www.archives.gov/veterans/
Some special listings of Native American servicemen were created, mostly by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). For an overview of these records, see the Guide to Genealogical Research in the National Archives of the United States (see below for more information on this book).
FEDERAL CENSUS RECORDS: Census records are available for viewing in Washington, DC and in all NARA regional facilities. For a listing of the regional facilities, see http://www.archives.gov/locations/archival-research
You may order copies of census records to be sent to you by mail. To do so, you must use NATF Form 82. You may get copies of this form via the Contact NARA page at http://www.archives.gov/contact/
Please be aware that you must be able to provide very specific information on this form to enable us to search the records for a person. Census records are also available on microfilm for purchase or rental. For information on how to purchase or rent census microfilm, see http://www.archives.gov/research/order/microfilm-pubs
INDIAN CENSUS OR ENROLLMENT RECORDS:
"Indian Census" records are listings of all the members of a tribe. They are not related to the federal census records discussed above. To prove Native American ancestry, many tribes require that you trace your lineage back to someone who is listed on these Indian Census rolls. Please note that tribal membership can only be granted by the tribe itself, not the federal government or the National Archives.
The most comprehensive Indian enrollment series is the Indian Census Rolls, 1885-1940, which is available on microfilm as publication number M595. This publication does not include the rolls for the Five Civilized Tribes of Oklahoma. More information on these rolls can be found at http://www.archives.gov/research_room/genealogy/census/native_americans_1885_to_1940
The Final Rolls of the Citizens and Freedmen of the Five Civilized Tribes in Indian Territory are known as the Dawes Rolls. These rolls are the membership lists for the Five Civilized Tribes: Cherokees, Creeks, Choctaws, Chickasaws, and Seminoles.
Both the Index to the Final Rolls and the Final Rolls are available online. We have detailed information on using the Dawes Rolls on our website, including step-by-step instructions on how to search for someone in the Dawes Rolls online. Instructions for using the Dawes Rolls: http://www.archives.gov/research_room/genealogy/dawes/main
These records are also available on microfilm:
M1186: Enrollment Cards of the Five Civilized Tribes, 1898-1914.
M1301: Applications for Enrollment of the Commission to the Five Civilized Tribes, 1898-1914.
M1650: Applications from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Muskogee Area Office, Relating to Enrollment in the Five Civilized Tribes Under the Act of 1896.
A listing of Eastern Cherokee was made by Guion Miller (the Guion Miller Rolls). The applications sent by those who wanted to be included in this official membership list provide a lot of genealogical information. The applications are available on microfilm as M1104, Eastern Cherokee Applications of the US Court of Claims, 1906-1909. OTHER RECORDS:
Indian school records include pupil reports and school census records, which may have genealogical information, such as name of parents and percent of Indian blood. Contact the regional Archives directly for information.
LOCATION OF RECORDS:
Many of the microfilm publications listed above are available for viewing at our regional Archives facilities. A listing of the regional Archives is available at http://www.archives.gov/locations/archival-research

The original records of the central office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs are located in Washington, DC, but most records containing genealogical information were housed in the various Indian Agencies which were located across the United States.
