In Reply to: MACKINNON, NOVA SCOTIA ... HELP! by Gereen MacKinnon of 1599

In some of my documents, I have a Mary Gillis, who appears to have born ca. 1861 and married a Neil Gillis. (My ancestor is her brother Alexander McKinnon, who was born On January 15, 1854 on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia and died on Septemeber 7, 1933 in McAlester, Oklahoma).

The father of Alexander and Mary was Laughlin McKinnon, who married a Sarah and died in August, 1868 in Lake Ainslie, Cape Breton.

The father of Laughlin was Neil, who was born in 1794 and who married Catherine MacMillian. He immigated with his father Hugh ca. 1810 from the Isle of Muck (off Scotland) and petitioned for land between Broadcove and Margaree in 1813.

All of this information comes from some materials provided by some of my Nova Scotian relatives. I will be happy to provide you copies of any or all of it. Just email me.

As an aside, My grandmother (a granddaughter of Alexander) always remembered a relative Neil Gillis.
