Sherry:
I have a great great grandfather ,James Brownlow Russell that was in the area of the Russells you mentioned in Alabama.
In 1830 James was in Tuscaloosa county AL living next door to his inlaws, the HILLS. ON the next page was Jesse C. Russell and David Russell living next door to each other. James was born 1810 in the Carolinas,, The 1850 census in Coosa county AL says he was born in NC, a later one in Arkansas says SC. In Coosa county where James and wife, Nancy Hill Russell moved to in 1848, there were several Taylors living in adjoining townships, the same Taylors that a Thomas W. Russell married into. I think thomas W. Russell and his wife were on the 1860 Chambers cty Al census... Thomas W. russell was related to John Milton Russell, born 1806 GA and who was on the 1850 coosa county census in a different district than the one that my James and Nancy were in.. James apparently was not the brother of John Milton russell who was incorrectly listed as james m. on the census.... there is a copy of the John Taylor will/probate in coosa county on the internet which names of his children including son in laws, Thomas W. Russell and Barley PACE who ties into another Russell family.
Thomas W Russell had been in Autauga county which joins Coosa/Elmore county.. In Autauga county at the same time was a David Russell who married Emily Smith,,, a Joseph J. Russell who sold some land... and a John B. Russell who was born in the 1780s or 90s, I forget and is on the 1830, 1840 and 1850 Autauga county census,, and was a worker in masonry as was the a William Russell in Coosa county of about the same age as the John B. Russell and also a brick mason.
The Hiram Russell in Jefferson county lived in the area of some Brownlows/Brownlees and his father was reported to have been a Stephen Russell of SC who died in GA. The Hiram Rossen of Tuscaloosa county was apparently in Hale/Greene county area also and I suspect the same person as the one in Jefferson county. .. There was a Henry Russell in Tuscaloosa county 1820s til 1850 who was born in the 1780s about and he was son of Henry Russell sr and wife Rebecca who went from Franklin cty TN to Independence cty AR where Henry sr died in 1817....The son of Henry Russell jr went to Union cty Arkansas where he was on the 1850 census. Henry Russell of Tuscaloosa county moved to Tarrant cty TX where he died about 1860.
Then there was Stephen Watson H. Russell , son of Jonathan and Anaphilda Watson
Russell who had been in blount cty AL in the 1820s and then in Tuscaloosa county in the 1830s about and who went to Mississippi
This has been very confusing trying to keep all of them straight...and this isn't all of them that I have mentioned and they were all close enough to be related to my James b. Russell. . My James Russell supposedly had a brother named William W. Russell, according to researchers of that family. William W. Russell was on the 1850 Murray county GA census and later moved to Izard cty AR as did my James B. Russell in 1860.
there was a John Russell on the Blount cty AL census that was near some Tidwells,, he was on the 1830 Blount census,,and he died in the 1840s.
I have some Caleb russell family information... I have a feeling that most of these Russells in alabama have a common ancestor somewhere back there . Do you have any pictures of any of your old relatives? A number of my russells were tall men. John, the son of my James russell went to Kaufman cty Texas where he was on the 1860 census. Gail
