Hi I finally figured it out. I've had good luck with the ancestors of William Bell, just not as much luck with his descendants. Many thanks to all for the help and here is what I have learned (some Workman info first):

Josephus Workman and Mary Polly Burgess had Louisa "Eliza" Jane Workman in 1846, in Logan WV.

Louisa Jane had "relations" but was never married to Marion Fry. The only Marion Fry in Logan about her age was the son of Hamilton Fry and Nancy Fry. He would have been born ca 1845 and I am assuming this to be him. In 1869 she had a child by him, Robert Lee Workman/Fry. Then, in 1871, she had a child Martha Jane Workman/Fry by him. Both Robert and Martha apparently switched back and forth with the last name of Fry and Workman. I cannot find a Marion Fry in the 1880 census and wonder if he may have died in the war or shortly thereafter? I am still researching this.

As far as Eliza Jane and Martha Jane, here is some information from a descendent, Cheryl Bryant:

My grandmother was Martha Jane, daughter of Eliza Jane Workman and Marion Fry. Eliza was never married to Marion. Robert L. (Lee) was also their son. Both of these children switched their surnames back and forth from Workman to Fry.

According to my mother, who is 93 years old and remembers Eliza, she was shot (somehow????) in the arm during the Civil War. Mom said her grandmother was "shot up during the War" (was she what is commonly called a camp follower?) and she was very bent over.
She said Eliza died at their house sometime after she was 9 years old, because she took care of her when she had a serious illness and the others had to work around the house and farm.

Apparently my great-grandmother was quite a character. She had two children by Marion Fry and was never married to him. You referred to her living next door to Burbus; according to Mom, she apparently lived with him for quite a while before marrying him. Mom said that her mother gave Eliza an ultimatum, either marry Burbus or she would leave.Mom said grandma was about 12 years old at the time.

My grandmother, Martha Jane, was married 1st to Burb(us) Dial. They had ix children. He passed away and she married my grandfather, Samuel Adkins, with whom she had four more children. Four of the six of her children with Burb Dial died young and never married. Of the other two, Everret died without children, but Enos had 5 children.

Her four children with Sam Adkins all lived to be at least 80. Two are still living. Nola Adkins Gartin Tomblin died in Oct. of 2001 at age 94.My mother was the second oldest and is still living. Essie Adkins McCann died in December of 1999 at @88 years. He only son, and the baby of the family, my Uncle June, is still living and is @88 years old.

So anyway, after Marion Fry, Eliza lived with and finally married Burbus C. Toney ca 1881 to 1886. She had a 1 child by him, ca Apr 1881, Bettie (probably Elizabeth) Toney. It was pretty impressive work for Burbus at age 61 or so to father a child but certainly not impossible, especially considering his wife was a "wild" 33 year old. Burbus was born in Oct 1818, the son of Squire Toney and Nancy Brown, and had a previous wife, Kesiah Sarah Lucas, b. ca 1819, with whom he had at least 10 children from 1839 to 1859.

I'm not sure what happened to Marthas child, Robert Lee, but Martha Jane Workman/Fry first married Burb(us) Dial, very likely the son of Andrew Dial and Marg(a)ret Dial, the only Dial family in Logan and whom also lived next door to Burbus C Toney as a family. This is probably where Burbus Dial got his name from. They had 6 children together, Everett, Enos and 4 others. She then remarried Samuel H. Adkins ca 1906 and had 4 more children, Nola, ?, Essi, and June (male). I am not sure who Samuel is the son of yet.

Now, Louisa Janes marriage to Burbus Toney produced one child, Bettie (Betty/Elizabeth) Toney, b. Apr 1881.

Bettie Toney married Albert J. Bell. Albert J. Bell was the son of William (possibly W but not Whitten) Bell, son of John Granville Bell and Martha Jane Belcher. William Bell, b. May 1848/1851 had married Lethia J Haner ca 1870/1872 and produced at least three children by this marrriage, Joseph B Bell, b. 21 Aug 1871 or Aug 1874, Albert J bell b Apr 1878, and Noah Bell, b. May 1884. Letha died 10 Apr 1889 and William remarried Rebecca Walls ca 1889. Rebeccas was previously married to Leonard Hill, thus she is often referred to as Rebecca Walls Hill Bell. William and Rebecca had one child together, Elbert Bell, b. either 11 Oct 1889 or Sep 1891.

So there you have it. I'm still looking for descendants of Elbert Bell as I've lost track of that side of the family. And still wondering what happened to Noah Bell. I've found a SSN death certificate from Florida that looks like it could be him...
NOAH BELL 18 Apr 1884 Apr 1965 (Florida) (none specified) 267-05-2608 Florida

Thanks and I'd like to hear if anyone knows anything about these people!
