I believe that the expression "Blue Bollings" refers to 12 people believed by some to have been children of Col. John and Elizabeth Blair Bolling. They are said to have "come out of the blue" in that their names do not appear in documents (such as John Bolling's will or son Robert's memoir) generally believed by orthodox Bolling researchers to be crucial in the history of this family.
The 12 are: Meotaka, William, Elizabeth (the one alleged to be a twin of William), Jared, Martha, Dorothea, Benjamin, Jane (the one allegedly born in 1740 and married to William Hopkins), Rodney, Rolfe, Powhatan and James.
The one I'm researching is Powhatan. A GRANDSON of John and Elizabeth Blair Bolling by that name lived from 1767-1803. The one on the "Blue Bolling" list was supposedly born in 1754, but I can find no evidence from primary sources that he ever existed. I wonder if the creator of the list with the disputed 12 names knew of the actual Powhatan Bolling, assumed him to be a child (not grandchild) of the couple in question, put him on the list and assigned him a date and place of birth. This is one of many mysteries associated with the "Blue Bollings."
