We went there by a little bit of a fluke. We were supposed to meet some relatives in Frostburg, MD, regarding a completely different line of the family. I had called one of the funeral homes in Lonaconing before we left here, asking about genealogy records, having seen it was nearby to Frostburg on the map.MY husband's family is from there, and I figured it was too close to pass up if we had the time. They guy was really friendly, and told us to stop in to the funeral parlor and he would talk to us.
We left Detroit in the evening, and ended up in "Coney" a little earlier than expected. (about 6:30 in the morning on 4th of July weekend) We had stopped at a park when we got to Lonaconing, and a state trooper came and talked to us. We told him what we were doing, and he said to go talk to "so and so" at the hardware store near the railroad tracks when the store opened. So we found Oak HIll Cemetery, then went to the hardware store. The guy in there said, "Oh, you might want to talk to Sally Adkins.....here's where she lives." So we go to Sally's house, park outside, my husband walks up to her door, she answers, he goes in, and we don't see him for about an hour!!! She had three computers with a ton of cemetery records on them! We found our BYERS relatives in Moscow Mills cemetery, thanks to Sally. Moscow Mills is slightly hilly, but spread out like a regular cemetery...not all crammed on a hill like Oak Hill.
We then went on to Frostburg and met the other relatives.
It was a neat little side trip.
