Cassandra,
If your family was named Bigger and resided in that area (Albemarle Co.)prior to the 1860's, if they were Mulatto they were probably mixed with Indian (Cherokee or Monacan). The terminology, Mulatto usually meant light complexion; other than white.A lot of the indians (during the early 1800's) in the Piedmont Area of VA listed themselves as "Free Colored" Mulattos to prevent being sent to reservations in OK. So when you see mulatto; it does not mean mixed with white ONLY.I found that my Battle lineage was really fully Indian; whereas my Slaughter lineage was Indian and Afro-American.
To help further your research, go on-line to the Library of Virginia. They have an on-line death index which list families and their parents. To get there, try http://eagle.vsla.edu/http://eagle.vsla.edu/.
If you give me your email address, I'll send you any information I run across that has the Bigger surname.
