Tammy Hargis, William Hyman Cayton was the son of Solomon and Mary Crawford Caton. Solomon was the son of William Caton (and I believe that his mother was Lekea Tindal) of the 1790 Craven County Census, N. C. William was the son of William Caten that was present in Beaufort County, N. C. as early as March, 1744. He purchased 300 acres of land on November 22, 1744, in Beaufort County, N. C. In 1872 parts of Beaufort and Craven Counties were used to create Pamlico County, N. C. The "four brothers" listed in the 1790 Craven County, N. C. Census lived in what is the Goose Creek section of Pamlico County today. William of Beaufort County of 1744 was the son of William Caton of Princess Anne County, Va. and his second wife, Jane (Unknown). William Caton of Princess Anne County, Va., was probably the immigrant as I found a document that referred to him as having been "transported in" by the name escapes me at the present. Concerning the spelling of the name: I have found in my research spellings such as Caten, Caton, Catton, Ceaton, Keaton, Catten and Cayton. The Cayton version was not the preferred spelling until about the 1920s. Not only have I found these variations of the spelling of the name, but have actually seen several of these spellings in the same Will listing members of the same necular family! The Caten/Keaton versions seemed to be the preferred version during the mid 1600s through the mid 1700s. Then the Caton version seemed to be the preferred version for a while. The Cayton version is currently the residing favorite. The spelling depended on the person who was writting the Will or other legal documents. I have been researching the "four brothers" and their descendents for the past year and a half. I have 5,000 names in my database. I will be more than happy to share with any Caten/Caton/etc. what I have. Gean Gray Caton Nelson Notify Administrator about this message?
