I am descended from John James Caylor, a nephew of your John Caylor. My JJ Caylor often is confused with your ancestor, since my ancestor moved to Murray County, GA and later lived at Varnell, Ga, and both men were Union soldiers from the same Tennessee county.

Here is data from the federal pension file for John Caylor (the uncle):
-----
John Caylor enrolled 8 Mar 1862 Boston KY in Co. B, 6th Reg, Tn Volunteers to serve 3 years or duration, mustered in as pvt. on 18 April 1862. Died in hospital at Murfreesboro, TN March 7 1863 of disease. James M. Armstrong, Captain of Co. B, 6th Regt., Tn Vol. Inf. said John Caylor died from disease contracted in service and was taken sick about 15 January 1863, died 7 March 1863 of fever. Was sound and able-bodied, healthy man before service. Nancy and Anny Walker testified to names of children (under 16) of John Caylor as being William T. Caylor and Perry Caylor. Perry b. 10 Feb 1854, William b. 1 Sept 1860 and that they were present at the births. Testified that mother of these two died 10 May 1865. Testimony 29 August 1868. Guardian of the children was Daniel H. Emmett (of Tuckaleechee Cove, Blount Co. Tn in August 1867.)
19 August 1867, Elizabeth Walker testified she was midwife at birth on 10 Feb 1854 of Perry Caylor.
Barbara Walker and Anna [Walker scratched out] Caylor [written above] said they were present 1 Sept 1860 when William T. Caylor was born at John Caylor house. Said Nancy Caylor acted as midwife and is now dead. 19 August 1867.
Copy of marriage license also in pension: Blount County, TN John Caylor licensed to marry Martha Bryant 27 July 1839. Marriage celebrated by Robert Shields, J. P., on 28 July 1839.
[note that Robert Shields probably was the same man who married Peggy Caylor and thus would have been John's brother-in-law.]
------
The parents of John Caylor were George Caylor, Sr. and wife Katy Headrick. You need to look for the two books "Descendants of East Tennessee Pioneers" and "The Connection in East Tennessee" for easy access to more info. In 1974/5, both books were available at the TN State Library and Archives.
