CAWKWELL - Mary, Martha and Frances (nee Cobb).
Hello. This has come out of my research into the GAUTIER, FRETWELL and FRESHVILLE familes, in Yorkshire, England.
I'm trying to find the maiden name of Mary Ann (c1788 Hull), who married (c1815) Pierre Louis Gautier (c1785 France). In the 1841 census Pierre Louis and children are in Sheffield, but there is a Mary Gautier in the household of Frances CAWKWELL, in Doncaster.I believe this was Frances or Fanny Cobb (c1767 Gainsborough, Lincolnshire), who married Matthew Cawkwell (c1765 Gainsborough - 1831 Doncaster).I haven't yet found a suitable baptism record for Mary Gautier - but postulate that she is visiting or caring for her elderly widowed mother, and was therefore born Mary Cawkwell.
I have also come across a Martha Cawkwell, who I am keen to identify (and even wonder if it might be the same person).Mary Gautier's daughter Caroline married Thomas Fretwell (whose sister Sarah was my great-great-grandmother, who married Henry Wilde).I'm told that a descendant of Caroline's in Australia has a scrapbook started by a Martha Cawkwell, in 1832.(I think that the Australian emigration only happened in the twentieth century.)
Can anyone shed any more light on any of this for me?Thank you, and good luck with your own researches.
Matthew Wilde.
