I can't help you with y0ur family of Caviness however I don't believe that Arthur changed his name .most of us Cavinesshave had varing spellings over the years my own family went from Caviness in NC to Caveness, and Cavaness in Indiana back to Caviness in Iowa it is an evolving name somewhat and its spellings are varied dependingon who took the census etc .one thing I am resonably sure of is that all are related albeit distantly , but still related This tells me that the name now is not the same as it originally was since all folks with that name seem to come from about 1725 . perhaps descending from one man a Henri Cabanisat least this is the likeliest candidate to date
