The deeper I go, the moore Cavan, Caven and Cavin's I find earlier and earlier in the Southwest of Scotland.
In the 11th century, there was an area called "The Land of Cavens." It became the seat of Clan Douglas. It is in what is now known as Kirkcudbrightshire.
About 1220 AD, the King of Scotland sent approx. 350 Scottish warriors to France as "Guardians of the Court." This was as an alliance between the two countries against England. Clan Douglas sent may of it's Men. I have third hand info 25-30 Cavan's went with Clan Douglas.
There were very close ties between Scotland and France throughout history. Allot of Scot's simply immergrated to France.
County Cavan, Ireland has never had any Cavan, Caven or Cavin's born, died, married, hung, or anything else.
If you go to your county library and look through the Peerage and Baronage books, you will find at least five different origins of the name.
