William Cavin Connelly b. [W]Va. c. 1822

I have not been able to trace my CONNELLY line back beyond my 2d great-grandfather William Cavin Connelly, born abt. 1822 prob. in a part of Va. that later became West Va.

Given the propensity at the time to give maternal surnames as middle names, I suspect a CAVIN tie.

I do not know William's ancestors' country of origin, but most of the succeeding generations seem to have married Presbyterians from the North of Ireland (Scotch-Irish folk). There are recorded instances of defections to the Methodists.

The subject William Cavin Connelly married Elizabeth Sterrett Brown, a daughter of Allen Brown. This Brown family may have had earlier links to Maryland. William Connelly and Allen Brown, his father-in-law, both were major figures in the hotel trade in Pittsbrugh, Penna. William and Elizabeth had six sons; Elizabeth, as a widow, and sons William, Jr. (generally credited as being the first out-of-town newsman to reach the scene of the Johnstown Flood in 1889; later head of Associated Press in Pittsburgh) and Eugene LeMoyne Connelly (b. 1870, art critic, newspaperman, promoter of the arts) all were in the Pittsburgh social register c. 1910.

Another son of William, also a newspaperman, was Frank Connelly who married Maud Dickson. Frank, too, was at the scene of the Johnstown Flood, and co-authored a book about it, and had three daughters with Maud. Frank died young, age about 36, in 1901; one of his daughters, Kathryn Downing Connelly b. 1888 was my maternal grandmother.

Any Cavin links to Connelly would be of interest to me. Thank you.
