It was great to hear that I have some cousins out there! Robert Cavill/Crudge certainly made life difficult for us trying to track him down. Just after Christmas I discovered where he was buried, but sadly there is no headstone.
Please tell me EVERYTHING you know about Robert and his children!! I have found the family on the censuses from 1871 to 1901 but would love to know more about what happened to them later. I am now in contact with two other descendants of Robert from his second marriage: one descended from Albert and the other from Henrietta. I had hoped there would be more so am really excited that you found my message on GenForum. Are you in the UK? If so, I am hoping to have a mini-reunion very soon, so you would be welcome to come along.
Let me know your e-mail and snail-mail addresses and I will try and get together everything I have to send you copies. I have copies of Robert's two marriage certificates and his death certificate, as well of birth certificates for some of the children. I still haven't solved the mystery of what happened to his first wife, Harriett. I guess that she died, maybe soon after their 3rd child Henry James Cavill was born (1858 in Devon). The earliest I have found Robert in London is in 1862 when son Robert William (Crudge) was born. Robert didn't get around to marrying Charlotte until 1868 by which time they'd had at least three sons.
Robert was christened (as Robert Cavill) in Dulverton, Somerset in 1833, son of John Cavill & Mary Crudge. He grew up in Oakford, Devon, which is where his father came from.
Hope to hear from you soon and look forward to finding out all about Alfred...
