I have some new information about the eastern North Carolina Cavenaughs that answers some of the questions I had posed earlier.

Benjamin Franklin Cavenaugh (1851-1915) was the son of William M. Cavenaugh and Mary Caroline Taylor. By 1860 he had been sent to live with Serena Taylor (maybe his grandmother?) in Lenoir County after William had married Levancy Ann Jarman. William and his first wife had a son named Joseph, and they could have been the parents of Temperance Elizabeth Cavenaugh as well, but I do not have any sources to back up that relationship. William M. Cavenaugh's mother may have been Native American, possibly of the Lumbee tribe.

All of the Cavenaughs from my previous message are descendants of Silvester Cavenaugh (d. 1799). Silvester had two sons, William and James, and possibly a daughter. James and his wife Rilla had nine children, one of whom I have not been able to place with certainty.
