Name shortened to Cave

My Grandfather, Clinton Forest Cave, who passed away in 1966 always told us that he understood the Cave name had been shortened through the years. He said it was originally Cavenaugh.However I have gone as far back as 1777 in Orange County Virginia and find no name change.Has
anyone ever heard of this? Could it have been before they came to America?
Would appreciate any Information.
