I have a letter you wrote my brother, Ben Stanley, Jr. dated may 5, 1983,when you were doing research on the "Stanley" Family and wanted to give this as a gift to you parents on their 50th wedding anniversary. My brother gave it to me and I put it away for safe keeping thinking I would get it out one of these days. It was not until my brother passed away 2 months ago, very suddenly that I though about the letter and got it out. My dad was Ben F. Stanley, Sr., my Grand-dad was John Henry "Chunk" Stanley who married Sally Dovel and they lived in the house you described in your letter at the end of the "cemetary." This would have made my Great Grandfather John E. Stanley who was married to Elizabeth Minnick and Dorcus Minnick. (My sister in-law tells me that quite a few of the Minnicks still live in Dayton, Va.) My Great, Great Grandfather would have been John H. Stanley who married Eliza Bailey. At the time you wrote this letter, you did not know where he was born, thought he might have been the first Stanley in the Shenandoah Valley, or where he or Eliza were burried. I am going over to see my Mom this next week and want to ask about the "P.D." section where there were houses built. I remember that there were houses built just to the north of the Town of Shenandoah. One of my dads' sisters is still alive and in a nursing home. I just might pay her a visit. Were you able to get much more information before your parents anniversary. After I got into your letter, I found it very interesting and have found several interesting articles on the history of Shenandoah, (one especially Eugene Kiblinger printed that was the original paper written by Rev. A.P. Boude in 1915,) the Forrer Ironworks, and found the "1880 mortality schedule Page County, Va." that Isaac Stanley died at the age of 42 years because of congestion/lungs. I am a novice at the internet and looking items up, but would be very interested to know if you found out anything more about John H. Stanley. Thanks for your help and if you have any suggestions for me on looking this up I would appreciate it.
