Hi You are correct that the information comes from the marriage certificate of George and Margaret. I have tried to locate William on the 1901 census and also on FamilySearch and BMD. Margaret died on the 2nd October 1890 after having two children, my grandfather and his younger sister. She died from renal calculi. George left England and came to South Africa and so does not appear on the 1901 census or on any records thereafter. We know he died in Johannesburg but nothing more. William was a witness at the marriage of Margaret so he was definitely alive at the time of the marriage. Margaret was, according to the marriage certificate 22 at the date of marriage in 1886 but 28 at the age of death four years later. I cannot account for the difference although it may indicate, as was not uncommon, that she was older than George and the age was "adjusted" in line with the norm that the husband should be older. One of the most frustrating things is that I cannot locate a Margaret Louisa Cave, although I can locate Margarets who may or may not be the right person. The most hopeful types are those who worked in drapers shops as George was a Master Draper and may have met her in his line of work. My cousins who live in France have a separate story that she was a "mannequin" in France and was a well known person in Paris. I do not think this is true but nonetheless there are some strange things about George who added a middle name when he married a second time in Pretoria and the absence of William and Margaret from records. The same could be said of George's parents who also vanish from records with no explanation. Margaret is recorded as being buried in Brompton but when I lived in Ireland I managed to visit Brompton cemetry and there is absolutely no record of her there. Any information, even in the negative, would be most useful. Regards David Knight Notify Administrator about this message?
