I only mention the different spellings because you may want to post on Caviness genweb, and you may want to search for Caviness. What year did your Richard live in ?? I have been searching and researching 20 years a for a Richard Caviness.Originally the family came up from NC and before that Va.before that France, the original spelling was Cabanis ,it belonged to a French Huguonot by the name of Henri Cabanis,I believe most similarspellings and there are many descend from this man .He had three known sons the oldest was named Henry, then Matthew and George.Henry's family lived in Mecklenburg Co va most of the descendants of his use Caviness,or Caveness,or Cavaness. The descendants of the other two sons tend to use Cabaniss,or Cabiness,or Cabeniss. I have seen the name spelled Caberness on early tithe lists for Amelia Co .One year I think it ws 1744 all three sons were spelled Caveness. To this day the name is mis spelled by literally everyone.I have never found any consistent spellings like Cavendish,Cavenah,or Cavinee.occasionally one of ours had their name miss spelled ,to the degree it looked like one of those names ,but for the most part those three names I have found are not connected.I will look in the Caviness book for your richard off the top of my head it does not ring a bell .My Richard was born about 1754 in Prince George Co Va.he grew up in Mecklenburg Co.Va.about 1799 he migrated with other brothers to the area of Randolph, and Chatham Co in NC..then about 1834 they migrated to Morgan Co Indiana. and some went to Lamar Co Tx.
