My wife's grandmother, Stephana Cavanaugh b. 1871 d. 1928, is believed to have been adopted and we don't know anything about her birth or family. She married Edwin Pratt abt. 1890 and they lived in Brooklyn, NY. After Edwin died in February,1909, she put her youngest child, Emily b. 1906 in an orphanage in 1914.We don't know if any other of her 7 children were also placed in an orphanage. Her other, older, children were Edwin, Mary, Elizabeth, Margaret,William, and George. Her daughter Emily was my wife's mom. Her second husband was Harry Evans. Stephana's father was listed as John Kavanaugh on her death certificate, but when she placed Emily in the orphanage she spelled her name with a C and not a K.
