My wife's father was Cecil Cavanah (1898-1966), son of Edgar Ross Cavanah (1871-1947). Both were born in Kentucky and died in Lakeland, Florida. That is about the limit of my wife's knowledge of her Cavanah family, except that they owned farm land in the vicinity of Hopkinsville, KY, and her father told her that the spelling of the family name had been changed from Cavanaugh to Cavanah because they were Protestants and wished to differentiate themselves from the Catholic family. Where Cecil Cavanah got that information about the spelling of the name his daughter doesn't know.
Using the Ancestry.com Online Family Tree tool and their databases I've attempted to figure out who were the ancestors of Edgar Ross Cavanah. At this point it appears he was the son of William W. Cavanah (b. 1824), who was a son of David S. Cavanah (1801-1871).
Although one or two published family trees show this connection, the best evidence I've found for the father-son relationship between William W. Cavanah and David S. Cavanah is that they evidently lived practically next door to each other in 1860, according to the US Census for Webster County, KY, taken that year. Five Cavanah households were clustered together, perhaps a father and four sons.
So the question is: Was William W. Cavanah (b. 1824) the son of David S. Cavanah (1801-1871)?
