Jean,
I just like to be helpful when occasionally I can. I'm a descendant of Ezekiel Cothern (b. ca. 1814 Emanuel Co., GA, d. 1878 Appling Co., GA, and a novice Cawthon researcher. I've been scanning every published Cawthon/Cawthorn/Cauthen, etc.,file I can find and doing some courthouse work trying to locate my gggranddaddy Ezekiel's parents. Found a lot of Cawthons in Franklin, Burke, Laurens, and Telfair Counties, GA, around 1800-1820, but no suspect I can make a case against. I did discover a few interesting things, though, such as that two branches of Cawthons, at least one of them yours, became linked to each other through marriage with the Walters family in Franklin County during this period.
Good luck with your research.
John
