Otha, Thanks for your posting of 5/30/04. Sorry about being late in replying (was out of town & off line). -- William Colley/Cauley was in Wilkinson Co. GA in 1830 and in Baker Co. (now Calhoun Co.) by 1840. So he made the change some time during this ten-year period and it may have taken some time to complete. Note that his son John was active in Baker Co. (Calhoun) as early as Oct. 1831. -- I would be very appreciative of receiving information you can provide as to the location and name of the cemetery with names and dates of deaths for the Cauley families. -- I don't have much information on William's military record. What I have is as follows: "William Cauley (Colley) leadership in the early history of Wilkinson County is shown in his role during the Creek Indian War of 1813. This action was part of the War of 1812. He was made Commander of the Wilkinson County Militia and was given the title of Colonel. Some of the Creeks were loyal to the Americans while others took advantage of the war to attempt to regain land they thought was rightfully theirs. Evidently, William Cauley (Colley) was a good friend of fellow North Carolinian David Blackshear, who settled early in this part of Georgia. For his role in subduing the Indians Blackshear was given the rank of general and huge land grants, totaling seventeen thousand acres. The name of David Blackshear and William Cauley (Colley) as well as George Cauley (Colley) are linked in the legal records of Laurens and Wilkinson Counties." -- George and William as brothers is not proven but there was a strong connection. As you noted William was administrator of his and Mary Beatty estates. Looking at the 1820 census for Lenoir Co. N.C. along with other folk's notes I have recreated Roger Cauley's family as follows: "Roderick "Roger" Cauley (b. 1740, d. 1810) and Unknown (Mary Dove?) are tentatively listed as the parents of William Cauley (Colley). They married sometime before 1771. Listed in 1800 Lenoir N.C. census. Children from this union have been reported as follows: (Note Lenoir Co NC was created from Old Dobbs Co. NC in 1791) ? John Cauley/Colley, b. 1771, Old Dobbs Co. NC; d. May 1828 Richmond GA. ? William Colley (a.k.a. Cauley), b. 1773, Old Dobbs Co. NC; d. 2/24/1857 Leary, Calhoun Co. Ga. ? George Cauley/Colley, b. 1775 Old Dobbs Co. NC; d. 7/6/1813 Montgomery Co. GA. ? Roderick "Roger" Cauley/Colley Jr., b. ? Old Dobbs/Lenoir Co. NC; d. 1830. ? Bartholomew Cauley/Colley, b. 1780, Old Dobbs Co. NC; d. 1859. ? Thomas Cauley/Colley,b 1786 Old Dobbs Co. NC, d 3/16/1850. ? Adeline Cauley/Colley, b.? ? (Unknown female) Cauley/Colley, b?" Note that old records show William as born 1775 and George as born in 1773. Information I have is that the reverse is true. See above for dates. -- I believe that brother George had a son (by Mary Beatty ?) named George. This George may have been born in 1810. -- Note that William Colley/Cauley had a son named George W Colley (my Great Grandfather) b. 8/22/1822 in Wilkinson Co. GA. -- William Colley's son John had a son named George W Colley b. abt. 1859; d. 4/2/1934. This George W Colley had a son named George W Colley Jr. b. 9/23/1893; d. 3/17/1904. -- Of interest is a listing in the 1830 census for the Thin District in Baker Co. GA. A George W (age 42) & Matilda (Richardson) (age 38) Colley and 4 children are listed. One child is named William. -- In the 1850 census a George Cauley (b.1834) is listed living in the household of Thomas R Cauley. George was listed as kin to Thomas R Cauley. Note that William Colley/Cauley had a brother named Thomas Cauley who had a son named Thomas R. Cauley. Another record showed that this George was the son of Thomas R Cauley. -- A publication entitled "The Georgians - Genealogies of Pioneer Settlers" pages 51 and 52 lists children of William Cauley as: Elizabeth Jane (Cauley) Freeman, Robert W. Cauley, George Cauley, Lisha (Cauley) Bailey and Thomas R. Cauley. I am not sure who is the father of Elizabeth and Robert but I do not believe it was William Colley/Cauley. Think they may be children of William's siblings. Lisha/Lisa is the daughter of William. Thomas R Cauley is the son of William's brother Thomas Cauley. The George in this list is not the son of William. The listing for George says he was born ca 1810 Lenoir Co. NC. Wife was Catherine born 1815 Wilkinson Co GA, decd. by 1860, Wid. listed 1860 Wilkinson Co. Census. (Could this George be the son of William Cauley/Colley's brother George?) -- The William B. Colley/Cauley who married Jane Davis still troubles me. This William was not our William. As you said is he a brother to Elizabeth Jane (Cauley) Freeman? Does look possible that the Jane Cauley buried next to Elizabeth Jane (Cauley) Freeman could be Jane (Davis) Cauley. But who is the William Colley identified by the Freeman family as Elizabeth's father? And what is his relationship to our William? -- Could Catherine/Catharine Cauley and Peggy Cauley be Brother George's children? Could be! Or could Catherine be the wife of Brother George? Could Peggy be Catherine's sister or child? -- My great grandfather came to Texas in about 1879. Some of his son's came to Texas earlier. My Dad (George W Colley) use to take me to the cemeteries to visit the old folks. Remember him showing me a grave without a marker. He said a man named George W Colley, who came to Texas with the original wagon train, was buried at this site. Dad knew we were kin but not how. -- From what I have read DNA testing of strait line male descendents of Roger Cauley/Colley might answer some of our questions. -- Cousin George W Colley Jr. 1189 Co.
