note...Grandma was a devout Primitive Baptist who, intolerant at times, held to her beliefs with a fervor. The following is transcribed from her writings EXACTLY, and is in NO WAY meant to offend anyone of other faiths. Stephen Downey

"The Pope of Rome sent out the decree that all Ireland should become Catholic by the year 1800 AD. The Caughron family were Baptist. Charlie Caughron's father decided to come to the New World.

The family consisted of the father, mother and five sons. Samuel was 17 years old. Soon after they landed in New York he went out to look the town over - and never came back, about 1797.

They were rich people in Ireland with a fine stud of race horces. Charlie must have been born about 1790, as he was 7 years old when they landed here - they were nine months on a stormy ocean, 1 baby born while they were on the trip. But they said "No hardship is too great if we can only worship God in our own way".

Then the first church they attended, the preacher was dragged out of the pulpit - by preists and those with them - and beaten for preaching "Salvation by Grace", instead of through "The Holy Pope and Catholic Church". But the preacher was helped to his feet and went back into the pulpit and finished his sermon.

The Caughron's came for religious freedom.

Charley is my grandfather. He married Lucy McGinty (I think, I'm not sure about her last name). But to them were born 15 children.
