I think you have hit the nail on the head---and I certainly never meant to infer that the original line of Caudills themselves were Melungeon. I think it is well established that they came from Scotland or Wales.

There is plenty of proof, however, that Caudills (and just about every family in these mountains) intermarried with Melungeons, Indians, etc.

Like you said, names have been added to that "list" (see Dr. Brent Kennedy's book) so much it that makes this "list" virtually meaningless when doing any real research.

When I look at my own genealogy of surnames, I find Scotch, Irish, English, Welch, Dutch, German, French, and yes, possible/probable Melungeon.
