Johann Michael Kettenring, his cousins Johann Jacob Kettenring and Christopher/Christoff Kettenring and Christopher's family arrived in Philadelphia from Holland on the ship 'Chance' in Sept. 1765. A little while later they moved on to Lancaster, Pa, where they lived for a few years. During their first year in Lancaster, Michael Kettenring married Maria/Mary Magdalena Marquardt and Jacob Kettenring married Rebecca Guntshorn (will have to check spelling on her surname, as I don't have my info in front of me.) Christopher was already married (with 8 grown children) to Anna Maria Susannah Gose. After a few years in Lancaster, Christopher and Jacob and their families moved south to Wythe Co., Va, while Michael and his young family stayed on in Lancaster. After a few more years, Michael and his family decided to move on as well. Michael and Mary arrived in Wythe Co. in the early 1770's (will have to check exact date) where they stopped to stay with the cousins that preceded them there a few years earlier. Michael soon had the chance to buy some 500 acres near his cousins so decided to settle their.

As Michael is my direct line, I naturally know more about him than I do Jacob and Christopher. Actually, I feel quite confident that Jacob is also my direct line ancestor, but lack absolute proof of that, but will try to find it later. Michael and Mary had 12 children, 2 of which died as infants, and a 3rd on, Frederick died in his early 20s during the War of 1812, somewhere down near New Orleans. He was escaping the Indians and while swimming across the Mississippi River, he was drown. Eight of the other 9 children eventuall moved to Sullivan County, Tennessee and neighboring Scott Co, Va. They were: John, Daniel, Elizabeth, Henry, Peter, Christian, Valentine, & Mary. The oldest son, Michael Jr. stayed with his family in Wythe County, Va.

Let me back up a minute and say that When the 3 cousins arrived in Pa, in 1765, there was already a couple of Kettenrings in Lancaster, Pa. Hans Adam Kettenring, who came to America in 1740, and Frantz/Francis Kettenring, son of Christopher Kettenring, who had come a couple of years earlier than his father and cousins.

As far as I can tell, all of the Kettenring/Kettering/Cattron/Catron/Ketron/Katron etc that are in Virginia and/or Tennessee descend from one of these men mentioned above. I am pretty sure that Hans Adam was a relative of the others who came later.

If you can get a chance to access a copy of Henry Hardy Catron's book on the Kettenring Family (3rd edition printed in 1978), you might find some useful info. It does not have a whole lot of background material on the Kettenring's, but does give names, dates, places, parents and children of all Catron/Ketron/Kettenrings (& all other spellings),in America and Germany at the time he wrote the book. I realize that there are some mistakes in his book, but he only put in the book the info that he was give at the time. He researched this family for over 40 years and visited every state in the US and Germany during his research. He stated that all the Kettenring/ Catron/Ketron etc, in the US were related and descended from Hans Jacob Kettenring (b. in the 1500's) of Bavaria (now called Germany).

If you have more questions you can e-mail me direct and I will be happy to share what I have with you.

Thanks
Betty Bishop Willoughby
