hi,
my name is Louis Hamilton Catrett,III and i live in fredericksburg, VA.. My father of the same name was from around Stockton, Ala. and his father was louis Sr. he also lived in balwin co. all of his life. With the knowledge that our family has on our line thru letters my grandfathers uncle sent back home during the civil war we can trace our family thru the net. I ran across a tree that had the information on my family and traced back. according to this, the Catrett name comes from the Mssr De Carterette in the St. Jean, Jersy, Channel Islands around 1580. This family came to the new world around N.C. and a segment moved to baldwin co. ala.. The name changed from Carterette starting with Abraham De Carterette's children in 1687, thus the name became Cartrette and John Cartrette moved to N.C. The children of John spelled the name Catrett in 1774. It seems that all of john's children moved to Pike, ala. and thus you have our name. The family branches out from there with our spelling and some retaining the Cartrette spelling. The best place is to search FamilyTreeMaker.com and if you know a little about you line from the beginning of the 20th century then you should be able to search back. good luck!
