Name: Louis Nero KNOTT
Sex: M
Birth: 26 OCT 1869 in Travis, TN Hardeman County
Death: 19 OCT 1950 in Roswell, NM
Burial: Roswell Memorial Cemetery Roswell, NM
Occupation: Carpenter, Farmer, Preacher, Fruit Stand Owner-Operator
Religion: Fundamentalist
Note: (info from Norm Kimbrough) I remember grandfather Louis Nero as a very religious person, never giving off a hint of what a rascal he had been in his youth. He was bald from my earliest recollections, always wore a mustache, and seemed to always be dressed in his Sunday best suit. he preached occasionally at his church. One of Louis Nero's brothers, Albert Sidney , moved with him from OK to NM. Together they started a bakery in Artesia, NM, with the women doing all the work and the two guys out working the territory to build up business. That didn't last for long before Albert Sidney moved to Carlsbad, NM, where he bought an orchard and goat ranch. That place is now a State Park. Louis Nero had a homestead west of Artesia near a small village by the name of Hope, NM. I've never been to the old homestead, but understand it to be much the same today as it was in his day. It was while at the homestead that my mother, Mary Elizabeth, overheard a discussion between Louis Nero and his brother Albert Sidney, in which Louis Nero acknowledged, even bragged, that he had not told Mary Hanna about his first marriage. Mary Elizabeth recalls that Albert Sidney jumped all over Louis Nero for having deceived her, and told him to 'git up to that house right now and level with her!' That was the first my grandmother Mary Hanna knew of the first family of Louis Nero, a little late to correct the injustice. Somewhere not long after that they moved to Roswell, NM where they remained until their death. (info from Norm Kimbrough)

Father: Marcellus David KNOTT b: 1839 in Maury County, TN
Mother: Mary Miranda YARBROUGH b: 17 MAY 1841 in Hardeman County, TN

Marriage 1 Mary Lou Nellie PARKER b: WFT Est. 1853-1879 in MS ?
Married: WFT Est. 1883-1917 in Travis TN, Hardeman County
Note:
Early accounts of Louis strongly suggest that he was not yet ready to settle down to family life, some ay he had a yearning for the wild life, whereas others claim he took what action seemed appropriate to keep out of the military service in his youth. I guess you can take your pick from the alternatives. His spouse is reported to have told some of the children that she knew he was unhappy and was only "hanging around" until his mother died. After the death of his mother he wasted no time in picking up and heading out, abandoning his wife and children. One account has it that Louis took the daughter with him, and that Mary tracked him down and retrieved the child. At any rate, Louis left and never returned, and never divorced his wife ( he was a bigamist). The wife and children remained in and around Sharon, TN, where life cannot have been easy for them. Louis later showed up in Indian Territory, OK, where he deceived a young lady by the name of Mary Hanna into marrying him. She knew nothing of his philandering ways and previous marriage until long after his second family was grown. He remained a loyal husband and father until his death in 1950. Mary raised the kids on her own, remained in Sharon, TN area all her life. ( information from , Norm Kimbrough)

Louis had been a traveling man in his youth. Sometime after he married Nellie they moved to Lake County, TN, around 1890-91. We believe William Robert was born there in 1892. Sometime later they moved to Weakley County, TN where Nancy D. Lallie was born in 1899. The story goes that in about 1902 Louis Nero left this family.

1617 The George, from London, arrived at Virginia. Ship and passenger information: Knott, James age 23 in Virginia Muster Feb 7, 1624/5.

Prisoner transported from a London prison to the New World in the year 1617 aboard the ship George.
James was soon to turn his misfortune about and within a few years is found to have been in the good graces of Lord Calvert in Maryland, where he is shown in land transactions of significant value.

He was living on the Eastern Shore Feb 16, 1623/24 when the Census was taken and appears there in the muster Feb 7, 1624/25.

He apparently lived on land belonging to Capt. William Epes who was no longer in VA and was in court several times because this was done evidently without authorization from Epes or his representative.

On Sept 8, 1634 John Fisher aged 30 a cousin of Capt Epes, testified that James Knott lived on Capt. Epes land two years after the death of Henry Glover, to whom it had been leased and refused to give it up to Fisher as Epes representative.

Elinor, wife of James testified June 16, 1635 about gossip concerning Mrs. Hannah Savage she heard "a Sunday Coming from church."

He is last mentioned on the Shore in Feb 1635/36.

In 1637 Nansemond County was formed from Upper Norfolk.

In 1638 James Knott of "Mausanum" (Nansemond) in Virginia, Gent., aged 35 years or thereabouts, deposed converning the Massacre of 1622 having been a resident for 20 years.

He did not live to enjoy his new residence long.

In reply to: seeking origins of the name Knott>> by Bob Knotts
I have done a lot of research on the James Knott. One thing I discovered while in England in 1994 regarding his coming to Virginia in 1617 on the George, has not been received too well by some: however, I am even prouder to call him my ancestor.

It seems that James Knott, "of London, yeoman" had been placed with John Jackson to learn the finer points of being a gentleman. James was brought before the sessions of the Peace, City of London, 1 Sept 1617. He was sentenced to prison 3 Sept 1617. The place of the crime was St. Katherine Coleman Parish, Aldgate Ward. For some reason he had relieved his mentor and patron by "force of arms" of a gold ring set with diamonds, another gold ring set with a sea blue stone, and four mother of pearl brooches gilded in silver.

"Aleica Nuttinge of London, spinster and Margareta Hamone, wife of Lawrence Hamond of London, yoeman....of parish aforesaid.... were the receivers of the goods and harbored James Knott from the authories. For this the two females were also sent to prison...(this info is from a record in the Corp. of London Records Office, London England, SF 78, Sessions of Gaol, Delivery 3 Sept. 15 James I.)

30 Sept 1617, James Knott was peprived out of the prison of Newgate, and delivered to Sir Thomas Smith, Governor of the East Indian Co. He was to be conveyed out of England, with the provision that he not return to England. (John Roche Dasent, ed., "Acts of the Privy Council of England, 1616-1617, 35:1617.)

The ship "George" was back in London in Sept after its earlier voyage to Virginia. Preparations were being made for a return trip to VA as a magazine (ammunition) ship. A number of men were on this second voygage of the "George" who settled on Gov. Thomas Smith's Hundred.

The transport of prisoners had been in dffect about 6 months at this time. Some time after issuing the decree, King James had said that all reprieved felons were to be sent to VA. I have tried to find out how many orders of transport had been issued before the one regarding James Knott. I have not as yet been able to do so. However, I suspect there were few as there were only 300 English and other European inhabitants of Jamestown and VA when James Knott arrived.

I have a theory that the order of reprieve of felons for transport to VA was made to allow the gentry to avoid long stays in Newgate Prison. A yeoman, which James Knott was called, was a member of the lower gentry. eventually, it took on a more sinister turn.

James Knott quickly established himself in the colony and within a few years was found with the title "Mr." which was used only for gentlement.

My study of James Knott is 16 pages with 95 footnotes, which is a chapter in my book " The Descendants of Thomas Thomas and his Wife, Elizabeth, Daughter of James Knott." As i said at the beginning, several were quite upset by this news and one or two have steadfastly refused to accept it. Most have received the data gratefully. I have a phtographic copy of the Goal (prison) Order framed and prominently displayed in my house. " If one has to have a thief in the closet, lit it be a high classed, refened one of good taste.... a jewel thief."
