Dear Angela
Thanks for the information, I was unaware that John Catlin came over with the Conqueror, do you have more information on him? Also,in which source did you find it?
The first reference I have found for KATELINA was in 1275, ROBERT CATERIN 1247 in the Assizes at Bedfordshire, WILLIAM CATELIN/KATELIN 1198 Norfolk. ROBERT CATLYN 1441, Shef., RICHARD CATLYNG 1653. This source states that the name is the French form of Catherine, introduced into England in 12th century when it became popular, usually in the form of Catelin(e).
Some claim that it is a Saxon name! Others that it stems from the name of a village in Germany from where the first immigrants came to England.
I found a ROBERT CATLIN on the IGI, birth about 1460 at Roundes, England.
