Dear David,
If the parishes ignored your requests for information, you might want to try repeating it and including a self-addressed stamped business envelope and a check or money order with the memo "search fee" included. My archdiocese charges a $5 search fee for genealogy searches, which they only do 2 days per month. You could also include a note that you will be happy to pay more if their search fee is higher. Then, if they don't have time, they should return your fee and not ignore the request. When you have a correct date, the search isn't impossible. The parishes are supposed to have their records properly stored and cared for. There are supposed to be little notes on some of the certificates referring to other permanent sacraments received by that person. Before a person can receive a sacrament, the parish does a check to see if the person is baptized, confirmed, previously married, etc.Even little First Communicants have all had their baptism records confirmed before the day and a note made in the parish records.
Do try the historical societies for your area and any Irish newspapers.Newspapers were very important in the 1850s.All the seemingly impossible things I have found have been through the historical societies for the area, including a note card attached to an unpublished genealogy manuscript that connected my person b. 1804 to the rest of his family going back to 1561.
Sincerely,
Kate
