Dear Deadra,
Here are links to a great site for central European genealogy. The top one is the overall home page, and the bottom one is the link for Slovakia.
This is a promising person on the 1920 census preview on Ancestry. The census will list everyone in the household (wife, children, elderly parents, boarders, etc.), their ages, their occupations, their net worth, how long they've been married or their age at first marriage, their employer, their place of birth, the place of birth of their parents, and more. You can usually view the full Ancestry file at your public library for free. You can also go to www.ancestry.com and subscribe, but it's expensive.
Name:Mike Taropshok
Birth:abt 1879 - location
Arrival:year
Residence:1920 - city, Carbon, Pennsylvania
Below is a promising person on the preview of World War I draft cards on Ancestry. There are some others, but I thought a county named Carbon would be in the coal mining area.My grandfather's draft card has his address, his occupation, his employer's address, his physical description, his birthdate and birthplace, and his emergency contact. You can get a photocopy of the actual draft card with his signature on it.It's nice to have.
Name:Michael Tarapchak
Birth:29 Jun 1877
Residence:Not Stated, Carbon, Pennsylvania
Other:Carbon County
The censuses and other documents really scramble the spelling of Tarapchak, so you will have to try alternate spellings. There is a choice called Soundex that is supposed to have the alternate spellings.Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't.
I haven't found any Mihalys.People back then were anxious to get Americanized and quickly switched to the English version of their names, so I looked for Michael and Mike.
I'm sorry about the wrong ones I posted previously.I had to guess at their possible birthdates from the clue that they were married in the early 1900s.
Sincerely,
Kate Hagel
