The Catholic dioceses don't usually have a database they can search. They have to search manually through their records. In many dioceses the parish where the people lived kept the records, so you have to write to the parish they lived in.(You might be able to figure out which parish from the enumeration districts and all on the census form)You have to give Catholic organizations correct dates on which people received a sacrament, or they can't find them. Most dioceses aren't set up for genealogy, and my diocese only does genealogy look ups 2 days per month. There's a personnel shortage in the Catholic church, so the diocese doesn't really have enough people to do research.Be sure to ask if there is a fee.My diocese charges $5 per record.A diocese or parish can look up baptism, confirmation, marriage, and the burial records of Catholic cemeteries. Also records about religious vows and ordinations.
You will probably have better results checking civil records, especially death records, cemetery records, marriage records, voter registrations, directories, newspapers, and the local historical society. You have to pay the historical society a fee for look ups.If you go to your public library and they have a subscription to a genealogy database such as Ancestry, you can search for them in many databases. You should check the ship's lists of immigrant arrivals to see if you can find when they came and on what ship.Since the Civil War started in 1861 and ended in 1864, you should check Civil War records, too.If any of them bought a farm, you should check land patents.
Irish records are usually in the Parish church where the people lived at the time they received a sacrament such as baptism or marriage.
Sincerely,
Kate
