Remarriage within the church

I am researching my husbands family. His great great grandmother was married 3 times that I have records of. Her and her first husband were married in a Catholic church in Liverpool England in 1890. I found the record for this. Then they immigrated to Chicago after the birth of their first child in 1893. After the death of 2 subsequent newborns in 1893 and 1894 her first husband disapears from the records. I cannot find a death record for the first husband with the city, county, or church. I have found the deaths of the babies in the church records. Then in 1897 she remarries but using her maiden name. If her first husband died then I know the church would have no problem with her remarriage, but if the first husband ran off then how would the church have dealt with that? When her 2nd husband died she remarries again but all the records list her with her 2nd husbands last name. When she remarried the 3rd time, in the church records theres a notation next to her name "vidua". Any idea as to what that means? Any help would be much appreciated.
Heather
