My grandmother was Beatrice May Johnston McKee. Her mother was Mary Ellen Catherwood Johnston. Grandma was born ca 1890 - 1892 in Brooklyn, and died in Brooklyn in 1938. Mary Ellen was born in Brooklyn, but we have no clue when Mary Ellen was born, nor do we know who her parents were. Mary Ellen married a Harold Johnston (although on grandma's death certificate it listed her father's name as John Johnston, so he must have been John Harold Johnston and went by Harold). Harold came from Ireland, but again, we don't know when.
My dad, John Francis McKee Jr was born in April, 1919. He was born at 597 E. 3rd Street in Brooklyn. This was a 2 family residence. His parents, Mary Ellen Catherwood, one of her unmarried daughters, and one of her unmarried sons, and a border, by the name of James Costello, were all living there in one half of the house in the 1920 census. By this time, Harold was not mentioned, so he must have already died by then. I do know that grandma also had brothers named Joseph D. Johnston, Harold Johnston, and possibly a William Johnston (but I'm not entirely sure of that). She also had sisters, but their names are not entirely clear...possibly a Rose or Rosemary, and maybe one named Catherine or Kate. The confusion stems from 2 of them becoming nuns, and taking the names Sister Rosemary and Sister Bernadette. Joseph is buried next to my grandparents in St. John's cemetery. He died in 1919, and he was married according to his tombstone. Harold "may" have been studying for the priesthood, and he "may" have been killed in WWI, but it's not certain at this point.
Beatrice May Johnston McKee, and John Francis McKee sr. had six children: John F. Jr., Mary, Anne, Beatrice, Rose and Catherine.
If anyone knows anything about this family, or even about their boarder, James Costello, please, contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org Thanks
