Patricia Ann Gary Cates passed away on April 6, 2009 in Hobbs, New Mexico. She was an avid geneaologist havin compiled significant information on the Cates Family, Gary, Basil, Laird, Compher and others. Patricia was the wife of Robert E. Cates of Flora, Illinois, who lived from October 25, 1930 to April 24, 1999. They moved from Illinois to Flagstaff Arizona and then to Las Cruces New Mexico where Pat was a public school teacher and Robert was first station manager of KRWG-TV public television from New Mexico State University. They later bought and ran newspapers in southern New Mexico until Robert joined a law firm in Hobbs, New Mexico. They have three children: Robert Gary Cates, born November 15, 1963 in St. Joseph Michigan; Laura Jeanne Cates (now Laura Gutierrez) born in Benton Harbor, Michigan on January 16, 1965 and Sharon Elizabeth Cates, born in Las Cruces, New Mexico on January 6, 1968. Patricia died in Hobbs, New Mexico, her home since 1978. Patricia was the daughter of Harold James Gary and Velma Van Lora Basil and was born September 22, 1934. She married Robert Eugene Cates on September 16, 1961. Robert was the only son of Elmo Anderson Cates and Velma Mae Compher of Wayne County, Illinois. His grandfather was John Cates, GG Lorenzo Estridge Cates, GGG Ephraim Cates Jr., GGGG Ephraim Cates Sr., GGGGG Thomas Cates, Jr., GGGGGG Thomas Cates, Sr., GGGGGGG Robert Ezra Cate (the Shoemaker), GGGGGGGG William Abraham Cate of Colyton, Devon. The family hopes to put much of Pat's genealogy information on a website in the future to share her passion and extensive information too detailed to do justice in a post. Pat, my mother, was an exceptional lady of grace, wit, humor, and sunny disposition and she is greatly missed. She was interred after cremation along with my father Robert Eugene Cates at the St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery in Las Vegas, New Mexico. This was done as a courtesy to the surviving family as Pat and Bob were Unitarian and attended the Methodist most of their lives in Hobbs but most of us kids have fallen in with the Catholics in our marriages.
