I rather like the idea of a Catchpole being a fisherman, however my understanding is that the 'Catchpole' of the village was actually a very early fireman/constable.

The Catchpole was the keeper of the pole used to pull the burning thatch roofing from cottages and barns.

My own family originates from an area just outside Ipswich, which is in Suffolk, England.
