most of that area in the monterrey area was owned by three Castros: Joseph (I think was the name)his daughter and son, Raphael. It is difficult to say who owned the barn at the time, as those guys had many children and grandchildren, and they ofetn gave plots of land to their kids and grandkids. soem of the ranchos were sold off to corporations or "repossed" after California became a state.
My suggestion is that you look at land records at the county couthouse to find out exatly which castro owned the property. It could be daunting because there are so many. as far as who was in the fire, you might check with you local genealogy society as they generally have pretty good records and there would prolly have been a newspaper article at the time. Likely something like a barn fire would have not gone unnoticed.
