Joaquin Castro came to the U.S. at the age of 7 with his parents and siblings in the Anza party of 1776 from Sonora.
He married Antonia Amador, daughter of Pedro Amador, his army Sergeant. They brought their children Ignacio and Antonia with them in their move to Branciforte. Eleven other children were born there. Antonia died and Joaquin then married Rosalia Briones, said to have been young and they had three children. Joaquin and his children were grantees of at least seven ranchos in the region and were founded one of the two great families of present day Santa Cruz County.
