Wow! What an interesting (albeit confusing) document! It may be that somebody attempted to copy this information from some sort of original document, which might explain the typing. Whether or not these De Castros are related to the current Castros is a mystery, but certainly not out of the realm of possibility. Many of the original Castros were from Spain, I think in or near the Toledo area. I think some left in the 1500's or so and went to other areas of Europe, and soem names were changed to "Castro" either after conversion or to avoid the Inquisition. Some were Sephardic Jews. I do not recognize most of the place names in this document, but some of the names appear to be French or German. The fact that at least one of these guys was buried in Belgium might explain. Looks like one woman went to Baden, Germany another to Nova Scotia, so, for some reason this family was traveling around a lot.Probably because these guys were soldiers?) I think if I were trying to decipher this (and I think I will print it off and work on it, I love a mystery!) I would start with the simplest beginning: sketch out a tree to seperate out who is who. Write down the various places names, and information you know from the document. Find out where the places are, see if you can locate the "castle" referred to, and maybe the "coat of arms". See what, or if, anything you can find out about the "author". Where is the "land of Waes"? or what? In thinking more about this, you said you found Mary DeCastro in Maine? Pretty close to Nova Scotia. How did she get there? At little historical research can lead to a lot of answers. You might look to what was happening in Europe during these time frames. Since these guys were soldiers, that could tell you where and why there were in the places they were. If someone was born in Spain (and apparently had some kind of estate), don't you find it odd they would be buried in Belgium? I am sorry I could not be much help, but, if you don't mind, I would like to look at this a little more and see what I can find out. I would like to keep your email address in my file. If I discover anything I would be delighted to send it to you, and hope you will remain in contact with me. Thank you for this opportunity. Notify Administrator about this message?
