Jean Baptiste Castonguay b. 1812, Canada
Michel, Bruno and Jerry:
You have all tried to help me find my ancestor, but I don't believe any of you were correct, the ages and names don't quite match.
I have since found my great great grandfather's Naturalization record from Plattsburgh, Clinton County, New York.In it he states he came to U.S. from Province Canada East when he was 17.At time of Naturalization, September 16, 1852, he was 40, therefore he was born abt. 1812.He signs the record J. B. Castongay. He is called John Castongay in the deposition. His descendants said the name was Castonguay.
I believe his wife was Adalaide or Adeline Charron. They would have married about 1835 as their oldest son, John Baptiste was born March 2, 1836.[I have the son's Civil War pension application from Ohio.]I don't know if they married in Canada or New York. They attended Catholic church in Plattsburgh.I haven't been able to find any cemetery records for them.
They went by the name "Casley" for civil matters.
I first found the family in 1850 in Malone, Franklin Co., New York, but in 1860 they were in Plattsburgh. Can you please connect him to the Quebec Castonguays.I have looked at some records from Canada, but don't know French.I am hoping this additional information will narrow the search.
