I am descended from Eliza Castle, who married Chester Potter. Our family has a handwritten document, dated June 4, 1851, in which the narrator, almost certainly Chester Potter, describes in depth his ancestors (5 generations), his own family, and his grandchilren and great-grandchildren.I am descended from Chester and Eliza's eldest child, Harriet Abigail Potter.
Chester married Eliza Castle on 30 December 1821 in Ashtabula Ohio, according to this account. At that time, Eliza had three children by her husband George Goff (Betsey b1809, Pamela b1811, and Rufus Stanley b1816), and Chester had two children (Mary Ann b1811 and Avis Maria b1818).Together, Chester and Eliza had three more children - Harriet Abigail b1822, Cecelia Eliza b1826, and Clarissa Emeline b1828.
This account, however, says very little about Eliza. For years, I have strongly suspected that she was the daughter of Amasa Castle (b1755), but have been unable to find any proof. Our family document states that she was born in Northbury CT (later renamed Plymouth) on 15 July 1788.In trying to document her father, I have learned that Amasa and other Castles went to Vermont sometime after the Revolutionary War, which lead me to conclude that Eliza probably married George Goff in Vermont.Again, I have not found any evidence of this marriage.
Eleven years after Chester's death (Oct 1851, just a few months after our family document was written), Eliza married 3rd William McGreenwood/Greenwood.However, she is buried next to Chester.Eliza died 17 Oct 1873.
It appears that some of Amasa's children migrated to Oneida Co., NY around 1795-1805, along with many other Northbury/Plymouth families, including Chester's parents and other relatives. It also appears that some of these NY Castles might have later migrated to NW Illinois, possibly along with Chester and Eliza.
I would love to hear from you.It sounds as though you have carefully researched Amasa's family.I am willing to share a lot of information about Chester and Eliza, including details of their travels from Ashtabula to Warren County, Illinois in 1831, as well as lots of details about all of their children and my research on the Castle family.
