The Castillo family name became part of our people in the last quarter of the 19th century. Sylvester Incarnacion Castillo arrived in LA in the 1870s,from Texas, and oral history has it that his family was "run out of west Texas by the army". He had an older brother, Hosea, but he disappeared from records about ten years after arriving here. What we have learned of Incarnacion is that his maternal-grandparents were Miterio Espinosa and Raphaela Conti of the Mission San Francisco de Espada in San Antonio. Miterio was the Indian Governor of the mission at one time. Incarnacion maintained that his family was Apache, and research has proved this out. Recently, I spoke with members of the Lipan Apache Indians of Texas (San Antonio) and found thatCastillo is one of the primary names in their genealogy. You may want to check with them. Look forward to your response. Tommy Bolton,Tribal Chairman
