In the United States, Castillo is the 26th most popular surname among modern Hispanic families. In California in 1844, Maria Raymunda Castillo - daughter of Jose Castillo, of Mexico city, and Serafina Sinoba of Los Angeles - married Mariano de Jesus Soberanes at the San Antonio Mission. They bad eight children. She already had four children by Juan Bautista Alvarado. These children, Maria Concepcion, born 1831; Estefana del Rosario, born 1834; Maria Francisca, born 1836; and Maria Antonia, born in 1841, took the Castillo surname and were all were born in Monterey. Mexico City in 1753 boasted more than 100 people with the Castillo surname. Among these were Antonio Castillo, age 40, a carpenter and widower, his son, Jose, 11, and daughter, Juana, 20. Cayetano del Castillo was a candle maker. Felipa Maria Castillo, a widow, lived with her daughter and they made chocolate for a living. Don Juan del Castillo Velasco y Castro, born in Madrid, was Contador de La Real Armada, Secretario y Veedor de las Caballerizas de Felipe IV, y Alcalde de la Hermanidad por el estado de hijodalgo de Madrid. He was the head of the Castillo Velasco famlly that established itself in Peru and Chile in the 16th century. Don Francisco Castillo y Fajardo was appointed Marques de Villadarias on Sept. 7, 1699. Dona Marina del Castillo y Escalera Don Rodrigo del Castillo y Torre hecame Marques de Casa Castillo on March 3, 1761. Don Fernando del Castillo y Ruiz de Vergara became Conde de La Vega Grande de Guadalupe on Sept.23, 1777.
