Jefferson Casteel and Hope D. Miover had a daughter named Rachel Minerva, born 17 Aug 1834, who was my great grandmother. She married Jeremiah McKisson ca. 1853 in Putnam Co., IL and migrated to Calaveras Co., CA ca 1867 where my grandmother was born later that year. Jeremiah was killed by a neighbor when my grandmother was a child in arms and Rachel returned to Cass Co., MO where her parents were living at that time (see 1870 census). Jefferson's full name was Thomas Jefferson Joseph Casteel, Jr. and I believe his father was the Joseph Casteel who was the man of that name in the 1810 census of that part of Cumberland Co., KY that fell into Monroe Co. in 1820 where he was in the 1820 census. Jefferson stated in the 1880 census of Putnam Co., IL that he was age 68, born in KY. Jefferson married Hope D. Miover ion Warren Co., KY in 1828. I believe Joseph, Sr. had been in Russell Co., VA prior to 1810 and had moved there from Greenbrier Co., VA (now WV)where he was in the reccords as early as 1797. I believe his father was also named Joseph and that he was the Joseph Castell who bought land from John and Nancy Wood in 1797 that was witnessed by John Casteel (probably his brother) and Joseph Casteel, Jr.(his son). Neither have I been able to track the older Joseph Casteel back to his antecedents despite there being many Joseph Casteels in earlier records and Casteels going back to at least as early as 1643 with a William Casteele (Nugent Vol. I) If you or others have information leading back from Joseph Casteel of Greenbrier Co., VA ca. 1787 (census by Netti-Schreiner-Yantis and Florence Love), please contact me. My e-mail address is cgantfam@local.net. Cliff Gant I have a lot of other data prior to but can't really prove seem to prove that Jefferson's father was the family originated in Greenbrier
