Att: Jon Adams - You are on the right track, but it is even more interesting: The Casteel name is actually an Americanized version of du Castel, although vn den Casteele also exists. It all goes back to Roman times: The people living in this part of the world (What today constitutes Northern France and Southern Belgium used to refer to the Roman fortifications known as Castellums with a dialectal variation:Chastel or Castel in France and Castiel later Casteele or Kasteele in Flanders. The Casteel family of America seems to originate from people belonging to the "Castel" of the city Lille - there are mentions of Dou Castiel here from as far back as ca. 1250.
