Jon, My mother Joan Casteel Zilaff is descended from Edmond I, Edmond II, Edmond III, Shadrach, Thomas, Jeremiah I, William, Jeremiah II, William W., Victor Earl, Roy William(her father). I am Gary F. Zilaff. I have a son named Edmond du Casteel de Blangerval Zilaff. However, he now uses only Casteel as a middle name. We have a copy of the original deed you refer to, which I will (try to)decipher as follows:
To all persons etc., Know Yee that for and in consideration that Edmond Casteell of Prince Georges County in our province of Maryland hath and unto him three hundred acres of land...being and unto him by virtue of a warrant for that quantity-Granted him the twelfth day of October Seventeen Hundred Thirteen as appears in our land office & upon such conditions and terms as are expressed in our Conditions of plantations of our province bearing date of the fifth day of Aprill- Sixteen Hundred Eighty Four and remaining upon record in our said province together with such alterations as in them are made by our further conditions bearing date the fourth of December Sixteen Hundred ninety six, Together also with the further alterations made by our Instructions bearing date at London the twelfth day of September Seventeen Hundred Twelve & registered in our land office of our said province, Wee doe therefore hereby grant unto him the said Edmond all that tract or percell of land lyeing in the said county called Casteell Beginning at abounded White Oake standing upon one of the draughts of Piscataway run about two miles above Darnalls mill Dam and running thence Southwest by South one hundred and sixty paces, northwest by north eighty paces, north four degrees west forty paces, north thirty degrees east sixty paces, north east sixty paces, north forty eight paces, northwest by north sixty paces, west one hundred and thirty eight paces, north one hundred and seventy paces, east south east two hundred and six paces, thence with a straight line to the beginning tree, containing and now laid out for three hundred acres of land more or less according to the Certificate of Survey thereof taken and returned into our land office bearing date the third day of December Seventeen Hundred and Thirteen and there remaining together with all rights and profitts, Benefitts and Privileges thereunto belonging, Royall mines
excepted, TO HAVE AND TO HOLD the same unto him the said Edmond, his heirs and assignes for ever, to be holden of us and our heirs as of out manor of Calverton in free and...by fealty only for all manner of services, Yielding and paying therefore yearly unto us and our heirs at our account at the City of St. Maries at the two most usual feasts in the year, Viz, the feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Michael the Archangel by even and equall portions the rent of twelve Shillings:...in Silver or Gold and for a fine upon alienation of the said land or any part or parcell thereof, a hole years rent in Silver or Gold or the full value thereof in such coditions as we and our heirs or such officer or officers as shall be appointed by us and our heirs from time to time to collect and receive the same Shall accept in discharge thereof at the choice of us and our heirs or such officer or oficers...as provided...the...the...said sum for a fine for alienation shall not be paid to us and our heirs or such officer or officers as...before-Such Alienation and the said alienation entered upon record either in the....court or county court ....the same percell of land lyeth within and...next after-Such alienation then the said alienation shall be void and of no effect. Given under our great seal at armes this tenth day of December Seventeen hundred & Fourteen. Witness our trusty and well beloved Charles Carroll, Esq., Keeper of our said greater seal in our said Province of Maryland.
